Job Overview

MassCEC is seeking a Senior Director of Marketing and Communications who will play a key role in conveying MassCEC’s work and Massachusetts as a leader in the clean energy space to the public. The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing and implementing a proactive marketing and communications strategy to increase public awareness of clean energy adoption opportunities, Massachusetts’ competitive advantages relative to other states and regions for clean energy companies, the role MassCEC plays in accelerating growth in the clean energy cluster, and other key marketing messages relative to MassCEC’s mission. The Senior Director will report to MassCEC’s Chief of Staff and will manage the Communications and Marketing team.

The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications will be a trusted advisor to the Executive Team on all marketing and communications issues. They will be a seasoned professional, relied on for their acumen, instinct, and experience. The Senior Director for Marketing and Communications will have a proven track record of successful execution of marketing and communications campaigns and a familiarity with managing communication strategies with multiple stakeholder audiences, particularly government.

Job Duties

  • In collaboration with the CEO, Chief of Staff and other members of the senior team, and with input from the Marketing and Communications Team, develop and deploy a marketing and communications strategy with objective, measurable goals and proactive and defensive strategies designed to increase the presence of MassCEC’s brand and programs, to raise the profile of Massachusetts’ clean energy sector, and ultimately to contribute to achievement of our state’s climate goals. The strategy will utilize a range of channels and platforms;
  • Develop, lead, and deliver integrated internal communications and engagement campaigns to drive ongoing awareness and education of the organization’s strategic priorities, programs and initiatives;
  • Regularly report to Chief of Staff on progress toward goals;
  • Ensure the Chief of Staff is briefed on high profile and sensitive media inquiries and issues
  • Set up processes to ensure prompt response to media inquiries;
  • Work closely with the Healey-Driscoll Administration communications team to ensure alignment on communications approach;
  • Oversee and inform the development and execution of communications and marketing messages to ensure consistent messaging about MassCEC’s mission and programs, as well as other state clean energy messages;
  • Recommend and review internal communications with staff to ensure the flow of information sharing on big picture external and internal issues and updates from the top down;
  • Develop the Marketing and Communications Team annual budget;
  • Oversee branding efforts both internally and externally, ensuring consistency;
  • Oversee and ensure the review by the Marketing and Communications Team of presentation decks, newsletters, website and social media content, and blog posts;
  • Work with partners and allies in the state’s clean energy cluster (advocacy groups, businesses and other state agencies) to coordinate communications and marketing activities that support the clean energy industry in Massachusetts;
  • Enhance relationships and maintain contact with media outlets, and state partners and agencies;
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Director of Government Relations to ensure alignment in messaging and communications goals with key external stakeholders on all matters relating to legislation, regulation or policy;
  • Manage Marketing and Communications Team;
  • Develop strategy for events that showcase MassCEC and oversee implementation of events
  • Be point for and coordination efforts of MassCEC events ensuring that all staff members that have a role in event execution are aligned and that events run seamlessly;
  • Oversee the development of talking points, speeches, and written media for CEO and as needed for Executive Team members; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff.

Job Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism or a related field. Advanced degree strongly preferred.

Experience

  • At least 10-15 years of increasing responsibility in marketing and communications functions, preferably in clean energy, emerging technology or professional service companies.
  • Experience managing a team

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Superior writing and speaking skills, including preparing and delivering public presentations.
  • Keen attention to detail enabling final work product that is high quality.
  • Experience working closely with public partners at the state and federal level preferred.
  • Strong understanding of project management, including the ability to identify and resolve issues, manage risk, develop detailed project plans and specifications, and run internal team meetings as well as external meetings.
  • Demonstrated success in pitching media stories that are picked up by outlets.
  • Expertise in social media mediums and creating social media content.
  • Experience in developing video content.
  • Experience with developing public awareness campaigns
  • Strong knowledge of computer software that is related to web design, video editing, and graphic design, is a plus.
  • Experience managing vendors, including website developers, and creative agencies.
  • Sophisticated communications instincts including the ability to evaluate public relations issues holistically, considering all possible outcomes.
  • Established relationships with major news outlets, particularly the Boston Globe, State House News Service, Commonwealth News, Boston Business Journal.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven track record of being a self-starter and possesses the ability to learn quickly.
