The Challenge
We are looking for an Assistant Division Design Construct Engineer (Engineer II) to join our Project Development team.
In this role, you will assist:
- Serve as the Assistant to the DDC Engineer.
- Produce and review roadway design plans, estimates, and contract documents.
- Review plans and other deliverables submitted by private engineering firms.
- Develop roadway designs for DDC projects (small Transportation Improvement Projects (TIPs), intersection improvements, spot safety, spot mobility, etc.) using Bentley highway design software and workspaces (MicroStation, Open Roads Designer [ORD], and Corridor Modeling).
- Perform design activities, including horizontal and vertical alignments, intersection geometry, earthwork, corridor modeling, and plan set production.
- Incorporate drainage recommendations to plan sets, prepare traffic control, pavement marking, erosion control, and signing plans.
- Coordinate plan reviews with Raleigh to ensure compliance with NCDOT standards and specifications.
- Prepare project scopes, labor estimates, and coordinate negotiations with consultants.
- Conduct field inspections of ongoing and proposed projects.
- Coordinate with internal units, government agencies, private engineering firms, and public/private officials on assigned projects.
- Advise junior engineers and other staff in their day-to-day work to ensure a team approach to work responsibilities
- Assist our DDC Engineer with scheduling assigned projects in the DDC Unit to ensure completion of plans according to the STIP and Division Let schedule.
What You Bring
- Experience interpreting and communicating, verbally and in writing, plan details, project documents, policies, and procedures to convey information to consultants, department staff, and others.
- Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple to complex project development based on reviewing plans for completeness, compliance with engineering principles, standards, and design needs.
- Knowledge of time and budget management practices and requirements for development of multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Collaboration and coordination with private engineering firms to include technical writing, public speaking, and working with staff with technical and nontechnical backgrounds.
- Knowledge of NCDOT design principles, AASTHO guidelines, and all phases of preparation of NCDOT preliminary plans, right of way plans, and construction plans.
Note
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
