Sports Section Editor (100% remote) | Reports to: Chief Content Officer | FLSA: Full-time, Exempt

Summary

The Sports Section Editor will lead the strategy, development, and execution of sports content across the 1440 Topics ecosystem, shaping how our audience engages with sports information and education.

This unique role channels the editor’s expertise and natural curiosity in the subject matter to help fascinate the 1440 audience and guide them down their own rabbit holes. You will develop and oversee a weekly newsletter with a six-figure audience, keep your thumb on the pulse of the best new resources across the internet within the sports world, engage in outward-facing media opportunities (podcasts, etc.), and act as 1440’s in-house expert on all things sports.

1440 Topics is focused on evergreen content that is both timely and helps educate the readership, combined with high-quality curation of relevant resources. The position does not focus on traditional reporting.

This position will work closely with the VP of Content Development and Chief Content Officer to plan and execute content strategy.

Responsibilities:

Oversee Content Development for 1440’s Sports Topic Page vertical (~90%)

  1. Lead the sports section editorial strategy, including planning content calendars, defining thematic coverage, and aligning with brand and audience goals.
  2. Oversee the creation and delivery of a Sports-focused email on a weekly cadence to 1440 Topics readers (projected audience of 100,000+ readers). See a comparable example of the format from the science & technology vertical here.
  3. Plan, create, and maintain pages on 1440 Topics within the Sports vertical, launching multiple new pages per week. Each page combines a staff-written overview with continuous curation of the best resources across the internet relevant to the topic. See existing examples of sports-related Topics pages here and here.
  4. Collaborate with editorial and social teams to develop multimedia related to various topics (videos, podcasts, etc).
  5. Establish 1440 as a thought leader within the topic area via both developed content and potential public-facing engagements (speaking opportunities, interviews, etc).
  6. Stay current on sports media trends, league developments, and audience interests, bringing fresh ideas and innovation to the sports section and contributing to broader company initiatives.

Support broader 1440 mission, products, and strategy (~10%)

  1. Join weekly small and full team calls.
  2. Help identify opportunities to integrate 1440 Topics with the core product.
  3. Stay up-to-date on trends and algorithms to better support the brand.
  4. Report KPIs to the 1440 team regularly and efficiently.
  5. Contribute to improvements, test assumptions often, and help shape the fabric of our company.

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Sports Communication, English, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  2. 3+ years of experience editing sports content in a digital media environment.
  3. Demonstrated background in sports journalism or editorial leadership, including coverage of major leagues, events, or long-form storytelling.
  4. Strong editorial, organizational, and people-management skills; experience driving audience growth and engagement metrics in a sports context.

You also bring the following:

  1. Demonstrated interest and natural curiosity about the world of sports, and helping others learn about contemporary and historical sports topics and their intersection with society.
  2. Excellent research skills and ability to distill complex topics for a non-technical audience.
  3. Desire to learn, including an inside view of how a rapidly growing startup operates.
  4. Proven proficiency in writing educational content for a growing audience.
  5. Experience with (or desire to learn) using AI tools for research, concept development, and more.
  6. You're excited about our mission and making an impact at 1440.

1440 is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate, support, and are committed to creating an environment where people with different backgrounds, skills, and perspectives feel welcomed and included.
