Job Title: Senior Data & Systems Engineer (Rust)
Location: Remote (US-based)
Compensation: $150,000 – $200,000 + bonus + stock options
A mission-driven technology company is seeking a Senior Data & Systems Engineer to help scale and optimize one of the largest facial recognition data systems in the world. Since 2018, the company has built a robust database containing tens of billions of images and metadata — serving law enforcement and government agencies globally.
At the heart of this company is a deep focus on high-performance data engineering — and they’re looking for a systems-level thinker who thrives on handling complex datasets at scale.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Architecting and maintaining high-throughput, low-latency systems for ingesting and querying massive volumes of image and video metadata.
- Writing performant, reliable code in Rust (and occasionally C++ or Python) to improve data processing pipelines.
- Optimizing systems for memory usage, database query performance, and efficient data retrieval.
- Collaborating with other senior engineers to solve scaling challenges across storage, indexing, and distributed systems.
- Contributing to both internal tools and relevant open-source projects, where aligned with business goals.
What They’re Looking For:
- Strong proficiency in Rust, or similar systems programming languages like C++.
- Proven experience building and scaling data-intensive systems — especially with high-performance databases and real-world production workloads.
- Solid grasp of systems-level computing fundamentals (e.g. memory management, threading, IO optimization).
- A thoughtful contributor to open-source or internal tooling, with an ability to align engineering effort with practical outcomes.
- Comfortable taking ownership and working independently without sacrificing collaboration.
Bonus Points:
- Familiarity with facial recognition, multimedia indexing, or metadata-heavy platforms.
- Contributions to open-source Rust or Python projects.
- Experience working with law enforcement, public safety, or related sectors.
Why Join:
- Work on one of the largest visual data infrastructures in the world.
- Make a tangible real-world impact by building tools used to solve crimes and support public safety.
- Remote-first culture with flexible hours — focused on ownership, not overwork.
- Competitive compensation with annual bonus reviews and stock options.
- Access to conferences, open-source initiatives, and continuous growth opportunities.
Interview Process:
- 30-minute call with hiring manager
- 60-minute online technical interview
- In-person session in a mutually convenient location
If you're a systems engineer who thrives on scale, performance, and purpose, this is your chance to work with cutting-edge data infrastructure — while shaping the future of safety tech.
