Job Description:

As part of the news and editorial staff, the Senior Science and Research Writer coordinates and produces content such as feature and short news articles and press releases for a variety of university publications, including Tulane Today, the university’s e-newsletter; and Tulanian, the university magazine, working together with the Editorial Director and other members of the Editorial and Public Relations staff. In this position, the Science and Research Writer will focus their efforts on stories that involve science, health and research, writing stories that reflect Tulane’s position as a leading research university and distilling highly scientific/technical information such as studies, clinical trials and grants into relatable content for a general readership. This position will also support the needs of the Editorial Department with daily responsibilities including occasionally building the newsletter template in Emma, writing brief Announcements and Featured Events, building stories in Drupal, and writing Class Notes for Tulanian magazine. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to find and write stories suitable for publication in Tulane newsletters and magazines, especially those stories that require understanding of scientific/medical terminology and basic sciences and how to present those topics for a general readership.
  • Ability and intellectual curiosity to quickly learn new scientific topics and to keep abreast of Tulane’s contributions to research and scientific discovery.
  • Knowledge of project planning, client service and communications.
  • Highly organized, works well under deadline pressure, and works effectively with internal and external groups.
  • Ability to work on multiple stories and/or projects at once, manage and adapt to shifting priorities, and turn quality work around quickly.
  • Ability to work effectively on a team
  • Working knowledge of Associated Press style.

Required Education and/or Experience • A Bachelor’s Degree in science, communications or related field.

  • Five years’ experience in a field related to the writing, production and management of publications and periodicals, preferably in an academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications • Knowledge of university and higher education issues.

  • Familiarity with content marketing.
  • Working knowledge of various associated software systems, such as Photoshop and Emma or other content management systems.
  • Knowledge of various communications techniques, including social media.
