Job Description:
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Editorial/Media Specialist for the National Institute for Early Education (NIEER). This position develops products to create momentum and awareness, participates in strategic planning, and develops an integrated communications plan to advance the Institute’s mission at Rutgers, within NJ, nationally and internationally. Communications at NIEER will inform many audiences, including researchers, policymakers, government agencies and non-governmental organizations, educators, foundations and other partners. The Senior Editorial/Media Specialist reports to the Senior Co-Director of NIEER, playing a key role in telling the institute’s story and expanding audiences and media coverage of its publications. The position works collaboratively with communications offices at Rutgers and Rutgers Graduate School of Education to position Rutgers as a leader in early childhood education and policy research by leveraging existing communications platforms and media. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to enhance and augment an impactful communications program.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Works with NIEER’s senior co-director and senior management team to identify compelling stories and convey them across media and platforms.
  • Collaborates with freelance videographers, graphic designers, website designers and communications firms as needed.
  • Develops strategy for annual State of Preschool report and/or other publications of national interest.
  • Identifies events, speaking engagements, and other activities to forward the Institute and its leading faculty among policymakers, policy influencers and policy implementers.
  • Develops and maintains media contacts for press outreach.
  • Contributes to print products such as fact sheets, policy briefs, technical reports and annual reports.
  • Produces press releases as needed.
  • Produces weekly enews in collaboration with NIEER faculty.
  • Prepares social media and blog posts.
  • Develops and executes a social media content calendar.
  • Builds partnerships across Rutgers and elsewhere to increase the Institute’s social media presence.
  • Manages and helps maintain website
  • Seeks and obtains external funding to implement communications strategy.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in advertising, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge, skill, and understanding of a broad array of marketing content and knowledge dissemination strategies.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in editing and writing including digital content and use of industry standard software.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and solid research and reporting skills.
  • Must be web and social media savvy.
  • Must be able to effectively engage with faculty and project staff members across diverse projects and convey the impact of their research/work and in a variety of storytelling formats.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects concurrently, work autonomously and as a team member, and perform effectively under deadline pressure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in communications in education, early care and education, or public policy.
  • Ten or more years of experience in communications and media broadly defined including editing and writing, with translating research for nonacademic audiences and with public policy.
  • Experience in media and government relations.
  • Experience in social media management and analytics.
  • Knowledge of or experience in website management and on-line publishing software.

Special Conditions:

  • Local and national travel to meetings and training may be required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $67,500.00 - $100,694.00 per year

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
