Hale Farm & Village Museum Educator
RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible to the Education & Public Program Manager
CLASSIFICATION: Part time, seasonal, non-exempt from overtime
SUPERVISION: N/A
COORDINATION: Works closely with the Education & Public Program Manager to provide quality educational and public programs for youth, school groups, and other visitors of all ages. Position might be asked to coordinate and work with Hale Farm & Village’s sales department, facility rentals, agricultural department, craft and trade, foodways, and preservation programs.
DUTIES:
1. Works directly or remotely with guests, from early childhood to adult, facilitating hands-on educational programming at Hale Farm & Village, outreach locations, or through distance learning platforms.
2. Reads and researches, independently and as assigned, in preparation for teaching all programs offered through the HFV Education & Public Program department, as well as learning background information to enhance and bolster existing interpretation and demonstrations of daily lifeway skills. These skills might include practicing penmanship, hearth or woodstove cooking, or garment mending.
3. Learns standard script for specific school and youth programming for educational delivery both on site and virtual education experiences, including Zoom and Google Meet.
3. Prepares and maintains the materials and spaces in all assigned areas for programs, including site set-up, cleanup, and routine general housekeeping.
4. Participates in the evaluation of programs and provides feedback in a timely and professional manner.
5. May be asked to help with the development of new program content and methodologies, partnerships, training of new staff, interns and/or volunteers.
6. Participates in special events sponsored by or at Hale Farm & Village, including mandatory attendance for select Hale Farm signature events.
7. Accountable to the Education & Public Program Manager for authentic, thorough, and engaging presentations to all audiences. This includes but is not necessarily limited to authenticity of dress/appearance, program materials and props, as well as the cleanliness and safety of assigned sites.
8. To be trained in 19th century craft production, which may include candle making, broom making, and fiber arts for both educational and sales production. This may also include leading adult workshops, school and youth hands-on activities, and daily interpretation.
9. Present engaging and appropriate historical interpretative experiences, including period costuming as assigned, program materials, and readying sites for visitors.
10. Accepts other duties as may be assigned by the Education & Public Program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Have a desire to teach and work with guests of all ages, from early childhood to adult.
2. Can work independently; contribute as a member of a diverse museum team.
3. Exhibits excellent research, writing, and communication skills
4. Exhibits flexibility to accommodate changing conditions while also prioritizing information.
5. The ability to exhibit tact, enthusiasm, and professional behavior.
6. Dependable and reliable approach to tasks, including remaining on schedule and managing time.
7. A passion for American history. While knowledge of the 19th century and the Western Reserve is desired, it is not required. All that’s required is a willingness to learn.
8. Experience in a historic craft & trade area, or arts training and experience in a related area, or the willingness to be trained in new skills as needed.
9. Be physically able to accomplish routine program tasks, or crafts & trades production and demonstration tasks throughout seasonal conditions.
10. Training or experience in education is helpful, preferably having an undergraduate degree in social studies, social sciences, humanities, or education; teaching experience in the K-12 range of grades or experience in a museum or youth educational program is beneficial
