This position is a key part of the District Communications team, telling stories in Omaha Public Schools through compelling photos, video and written work. As Nebraska’s largest school district and one of the state’s largest employers, there is an abundance of storytelling opportunities. This position will work closely with a district videographer, social media specialist, public relations manager and external relations administrator to develop and share multimedia stories across communications platforms.
Essential Performance Responsibilities:
- Capture and craft stories throughout Omaha Public Schools using photography, videography and written materials.
- Interview students, staff, families and community partners for stories using photography, videography and written materials.
- Gather photos and video from classroom lessons, school celebrations and district events.
- Work with school and district staff to develop story opportunities that convey the mission, vision and values of Omaha Public Schools.
- Collaborate with District Communications teammates to plan story distribution across paid, earned, social and owned channels.
- Capture photos of school and district leaders for use across digital platforms.
- Enhance the digital presence of district schools and programs with branding photos and video.
- Assist with organizing photo and video collateral in the District Communications repository.
- Deliver high-quality multimedia stories on-deadline, which may be the day of an event or part of a long-term project.
- Support media relations efforts under the direction of the district’s media relations lead.
- Assist in preparing informational email messages for staff and families at district schools.
- Serve as a member of the District Communications incident and crisis response team.
Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or designee.
Equipment: This position requires the ability to use photo and video equipment, and basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Must always comply with OPS’s guidelines for equipment use.
Travel: This position will require frequent travel between District locations. Occasional travel outside of Omaha or Nebraska might be required.

- Will work under the direct supervision of the External Relations Administrator to complete daily tasks.
- Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Expected to interact with all internal and external stakeholders in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.

- In order for our District to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
- Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Digital Media, Photography/Videography, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is required.
- Proven experience capturing high-quality, compelling stories through photography and videography.
- Strong understanding of photo and video storytelling principles and digital storytelling trends.
- Deep understanding and abilities within the Adobe Creative Suite.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner.
- Outstanding project management skills.
- Ability to meet frequent and sometimes changing deadlines with high attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
- Ability to work independently, with minimum supervisory direction. Establish work priorities and follow-up actions required to meet strict deadlines and other requirements accurately and completely.
- Ability to work collaboratively, creating and effectively delivering information tailored to target audiences.
- Experience using Microsoft Office products.
- Graphic Design experience a plus.
- Familiarity with Omaha Public Schools and its mission, vision, and organizational values a plus.
Terms of Employment: This position is treated as a full-time exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.
