Responsibilities


The Neuroscience Publications Department at Barrow Neurological Institute leads the academic publishing industry in author services focused entirely on the neurosciences. We provide editorial and media expertise to support residents, fellows, attending physicians, and researchers at Barrow. Our illustrators, animators, graphic artists, and multimedia specialists work closely with authors to create elegant, accurate visual content using the latest industry standards and technology (including a state-of-the-art render farm) to achieve higher visibility and faster publication.


Neuroscience Publications is seeking a Medical Animator/Illustrator to join our team! The candidate will produce animations, stills, and digital models to support the academic publishing mission of all Barrow departments, including Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Research.


Located in Phoenix, AZ, this is an in-person hybrid position with 1 day per week remote. Individuals must live within driving distance of the Barrow campus. Animators regularly meet with surgeons, researchers, and faculty during project development. Additionally, our team participates in regular department tours and occasional demonstrations at company events.

Qualifications


REQUIREMENTS

  • Expertise (two years’ experience preferred) with 3D computer animation, modeling software, and medical illustration.
  • Knowledge of video and audio recording, editing and formatting, and associated electronics and operating systems.
  • Proficiency in Maxon ZBrush and a segmentation software.


DESIRED SKILLS

  • Storyboarding and storytelling
  • Animation and sense of timing
  • Illustration
  • Refined shading and lighting
  • Experience with effects or simulation
  • Interest in technology
  • Knowledge of copyright
  • Proactively communicate with clients
  • Work independently and collaboratively on projects


The following software skills are preferable (but not required): Autodesk Maya, Blackmagic Design Fusion Studio or DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite, SideFX Houdini, V-Ray render engine, Substance Designer or Painter, Blender, C4D, or 3ds Max, a render manager software, Python, Lua, MEL scripting, Unreal, Unity, Godot, Mudbox, Wrap 3D, a database software, Linux.


EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Illustration, Digital Art, or related science field required.

Master’s degree in Medical Illustration preferred. Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) preferred.


Pay Range
$27.77 - $40.27 /hour
