Main Purpose of Job

These coordinator positions will focus on supporting strategic statewide development of systems for implementation of mathematics instructional professional learning, tiered student intervention, and school improvement practices that improve student outcomes in mathematics. The Coordinator of Mathematics provides evidence-based and highly effective program and initiative development and implementation leadership support aligned to the Maryland College and Career Ready Mathematics Standards to accelerate student achievement across local education agencies (LEAs) and early learning environments. The position will work closely with LEA staff and early learning providers to build the capacity to develop, interpret, and implement best in class mathematics programs and initiatives, courses, instructional frameworks, curricula and assessments, and innovations to narrow and close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically disadvantaged students.

The Coordinator of Mathematics will support the Director of Mathematics to develop, deploy and facilitate, and assess the effectiveness of ongoing, high-quality professional learning and technical assistance provided by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This position will also support the MSDE’s collaboration efforts with diverse communities and organizations (i.e., institutions of higher education, nonprofits; community-based partners; taskforces; etc.) to develop, implement, and analyze programs and strategies to scale students’ participation in STEM-aligned college and career readiness pathways, such as through dual enrollment, advanced placement, International Baccalaureate, and early college high school programs. The Coordinator of Mathematics will support MSDE’s efforts in implementing the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and its multiyear Strategic Plan.

POSITION DUTIES

Develops and implements evidence-based mathematics programs and initiatives, professional learning, and technical assistance, and provides content expertise and stakeholder engagement to accelerate student achievement.

1. Facilitates the development and implementation of high-quality and evidence-based professional learning including year-round in-person sessions across the State within districts and school sites.
2. Provides leadership support, guidance, and direction to local education agencies (LEA) staff, early learning providers, and other stakeholders across Maryland aligned to best-in-class mathematics teaching and learning practices.
3. Supports the management of programs and initiatives and stakeholder workgroups focused on ensuring equity and access to rigorous mathematics programs, pathways, and initiatives in Maryland Schools, especially for those who have been historically underserved.
4. Collaborates on issues related to the development and integration of accessible resources (i.e., instructional frameworks, curricula, and assessments, presentations, informational materials, etc.).
5. Represents MSDE at relevant local, State, and national meetings in areas related to mathematics content-specific programs and initiatives.
6. Supports the review and evaluation of high-quality, culturally responsive instructional materials, assessments, and resources to ensure alignment to Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics and evidence-based practices.
7. Formats, revises, edits, prepares and updates mathematics standards and framework documents for publication. mathematics resources (i.e., websites; playbooks; informational materials; etc.).
8. Researches exemplary mathematics programs, resources, and instructional materials and supports the continuous improvement of MSDE’s mathematics strategies and initiatives to accelerate student achievement.
9. Develops and provides high-quality, evidence-based professional learning and leadership support for local education agencies and early learning providers to effectively implement the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and MSDE’s multiyear Strategic Plan priorities and enablers.
10. Supports the Director of Mathematics in developing, deploying, and facilitating highly effective and relevant professional learning explicitly designed to accelerate student achievement, especially for underperforming schools across the state.
11. Collaborates with diverse communities, organizations, and LEAs to develop, implement, and analyze programs and strategies to scale students’ participation in STEM-aligned college and career readiness pathways and to build the capacity to develop, interpret, and implement best in class mathematics programs and initiatives.
12. Facilitates and manages data collection, program monitoring and implementation, continuous improvement, and engagement initiatives and special projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree or the equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate coursework in mathematics, STEM, education or a related area from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five years of administrative, instructional coaching, or teaching experience in, or affiliated with, mathematics and/or STEM programs in prekindergarten through 12 settings or related areas.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor's Degree with 7 years of the specified content experience to satisfy the Minimum Qualifications noted above.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the position option for one year of the required experience.
3. The required field of education and experience are unique for each option and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Human Resource Management Branch of the Division of Business Services.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of teaching experience in a Mathematics or STEM Education Program.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

4. Knowledge of college and career readiness pathways, standards, trends, regulations, policies, and issues related to mathematics and STEM fields of study.
5. Skill in implementing, monitoring, and evaluating, and providing high quality and service level-based support and technical assistance for education programs.
6. Skill collaborating with diverse communities and organizations for the purpose of implementing programs and strategies.
7. Skill in developing and delivering research based and best-in-class professional development programs.
8. Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks and time sensitive deadlines.
9. Ability to interpret and apply learning standards, policies, and regulations.
10. Ability to work as a team member and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
11. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
