Civic News Company, parent company to both Votebeat the growing nonprofit news organization committed to reporting the nuanced truth about elections and voting, Chalkbeat, the growing nonprofit news organization telling the story of education in America, and Healthbeat, a launching newsroom covering of health and health policy issues at the national and local level in the United States, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Accounting Manager with a proven track record of excellence in financial management.

As the Accounting Manager, you will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP and organizational policies, and contributing to the overall financial health of our organization.

The key responsibilities for this role include:

 

  • Financial Operations Oversight
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Finance, manage day-to-day accounting operations, including month-end close, general ledger maintenance, and accounts payable/receivable processes
  • Supervise and review general ledger entries for accuracy
  • Reconcile the general ledger and maintain workpapers for balance sheets and bank accounts
  • Grants Management
  • Oversee grants management, including budget creation, expenditure tracking, and grant reporting to meet funder requirements
  • Financial Reporting and Analysis
  • Produce monthly financial statements and variance analyses
  • Prepare quarterly financial summaries and present them to the Chief Financial Officer
  • Support the Director of Finance and Chief Financial Officer with day-to-day operations and ad-hoc analyses
  • Audit and Compliance
  • Manage the annual audit and tax preparation processes.
  • Ensure accounting transactions align with GAAP and organizational policies.
  • Budgeting and Collaboration
  • Manage the annual budget construction process and provide ad-hoc analysis.
  • Collaborate with the team leads to understand their budgets and actual spending.
  • Process Improvement and Training
  • Implement systems and processes to enhance efficiency in financial data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Supervise and actively support the training and mentorship of emerging finance and accounting team members

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • 8+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
  • Non-profit accounting experience is required
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables and Vlookups) and Google Suite
  • Experience with ERP accounting systems, preferably Intacct
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, audit management, and GAAP compliance
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Superior interpersonal skills for building relationships with key stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, remote-friendly environment
  • Commitment to process improvement and organizational efficiency

Bonus points if you’ve got:

 

  • Master’s degree and/or CPA license
  • Prior experience managing grants in a non-profit environment
  • Experience at an organization with multiple sites or cost centers

This full-time position may be located anywhere in the U.S. Civic News Company already has a presence in Chicago, Colorado, Indianapolis, Newark, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Texas, Michigan, Tennessee, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

The salary range is $85,000 to $93,000 commensurate with experience, with a generous benefits package, including:
