Heritage Park Neighborhood Association (HPNA) in Minneapolis is looking to hire an Urban Farmer to manage and grow the HP community garden club this 2023 season! The position is an average of 35 hours a month from April to October. BIPOC people from north Minneapolis are strongly encouraged to apply. Primary Responsibilities & Expectations:
This position will organize all phases of the garden. Working in partnership with the Board and the Community Organizer to advertise as needed, and obtain volunteers who will help plan, plant, and harvest the garden throughout the summer. The Urban Farmer will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Community Garden. In this role, the Farmer will support implementing strategies to maximize farm production and increase educational opportunities. The Urban Farmer will lead, train, educate, and inspire trainees and community members about urban farming skills and techniques to use at home and in their future. The position has a dedication to health equity and supporting individuals from underserved, marginalized populations.
In this position, you will be introduced to community organizing, navigating community-wide food security issues, land access and the specialized technical skills needed for intensive vegetable production in an urban landscape.
Primary Responsibilities include:
Garden and Committee Support
Including but not limited to: planting, organic pest control, harvest distribution & tracking, and seasonal maintenance, while working with volunteers.
Youth Development
Leading work shifts with youth interns in garden plots.
Work to manage all farm production, including soil preparation, disease, weeding and irrigation management.
Responsible for seeding, planting, harvesting, and washing of produce.
Assist in packaging, delivery and pick up of produce to community.
Find creative ways to use excess produce (canning, baking, and/or meal kits, etc.)
Responsible for keeping the garden site in manicured condition. Farmer will beautify site by planting flowers and keeping sites free of debris.
Using and maintaining farm equipment/supplies and infrastructure including landscaping equipment, tillers, and the irrigation system.
Communications with volunteers and trainees
Pre planning entails working with the Community Organizer in gathering and contacting neighborhood volunteers to plan the layout and brainstorm ideas for the work phases and maintenance.
Weekly garden updates to volunteers/board members, distribute information prior to and subsequent to meetings via email. Arrange for gardening training as requested, youth and adults
Arrange for meeting times at garden when available
Arrange for necessary materials and refreshments for garden events, reimbursable upon budget approval
Provide coaching in gardening and responsibilities, skill development; provide expertise in Community Garden development and season phases
Garden Management & Budget
a. Create a Budget: (seeds, canning supplies, tools, and other needs)
b. Time will consist of approximately 27 weeks, typically no more than an average of 5-10 hours a week, at approximately 225 hours by summer garden’s end. The understanding is that there will likely be more work put in to start and harvest/close the garden, that in its maintenance during the middle of the summer.
d. Snacks if appropriate, for garden meetings (as part of budget)
e. Pre organizing for harvesting deliveries, preferably to neighborhood, when garden starts producing
Event Support – Provide logistical and organizational support with the Board for the following events:
a. Teach prep for planning phases, and planting. Use contacts at MN Extension or other Master Gardener formats to create instruction and guidance.
b. Harvest Fest (Annual event hosted by HPNA in early October)
c. Possible frequent harvests and distribution to neighborhood
d. Put garden to rest at harvest end of season
Organizational Relations -– Represent the HPNA and maintain cooperative inter-organizational relations with the following organizations, as able. Keep the Board informed bi-monthly on status and developments via written summary.
Community connections include Community Organizer and Summer Interns (HPNA), Art Love Resident Council, part of HPl Grown North, Northside Fresh, Heritage Commons at Pond’s Edge, Thomas Feeney Resident Council, Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, Lofts at IMS, McCormack Baron Salazar, Green Garden Bakeries, Urban Strategies.
