The incumbent provides clinical psychosocial and case management services at an independent
practice level to eligible Veterans and their family members to meet biological, psychological, social
and environmental needs.
The psychosocial process will include: current acceptance of disability, rehabilitative potential, support systems and community adjustments; psychosocial treatment and services to alleviate personal/social problems which interfere with the course of treatment, rehabilitative/maintenance efforts, or community adjustments; utilizing family, community and other resources appropriate to the total treatment plan, and; broadening the service delivery in the community for the patient and his/her family as needed to further rehabilitative and/or maintenance efforts and to assist the patient in achieving an optimal level of community functioning in keeping with disabilities.
Veterans treated come from a wide geographic area. Their health care and psychosocial problems and needs are complex and require a high degree of clinical oversight and creative problem-solving.
Services are provided in healthcare settings, both inpatient and ambulatory, and in the community. These services will include but are not limited to the following: preparing psychosocial assessments on patients assigned and referred to the social worker in the program according to Medical Center and Service level policies.

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship : Be a citizen of the United States
. English Language Proficiency : Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.
Education : Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
Licensure : Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to
Grade Determinations : In addition to the basic requirements, you must meet the grade requirements for the GS-11 grade level.
Experience and Licensure . Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of 1 year of post-MSW degree experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care social work settings, (V.A. or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level.
OR
Education and Licensure . In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level.

Physical Requirements : The work is primarily sedentary. Typically, the employee will sit to do the work, however, there may be some walking, driving, standing, bending, carrying light items (such as books, papers), accessing transportation, and/or driving a government vehicle. The work requires patience and control of emotions. The work may require occasional use of appropriate techniques to physically restrain clients who present a danger to self or others.
