The Manager, Energy and Sustainability implements sustainability initiatives to ensure efficient campus operations in the areas of energy, water, habitat, waste management and utilities. Assists in developing and monitoring budgets and utility accounts. Supervises assigned facilities staff.
Essential Functions
- Oversees development and implementation of the College’s sustainability plan in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and provides recommendations for sustainability goals.
- Assists in developing and monitoring annual budgets and utilities accounts.
- Collaborates in recommending capital investment projects that are aligned with college sustainability efforts.
- Supervises, coaches, mentors, directs, and evaluates the performance of assigned staff.
- Manages district-wide Building Automation Systems (BAS), utility tracking and Energy Management Systems (EMS) for proper operations and efficient energy use.
- Develops and maintains standards for BAS and EMS systems. Develops and maintains building schedules, setpoints, and setbacks in support of campus operations and College mission.
- Monitors, tracks, and reports on the College’s sustainability efforts which include quantitative and qualitative measures on energy and water consumption, waste management. Identifies usage trends and recommends opportunities for improvement.
- Performs research; identifies, evaluates, and recommends potential projects for upgrading building systems, improving energy conservation, water efficiency, and protecting environmental habitats. Conducts routine assessments for quality assurance.
- Assists in the development of campus operations, maintenance, and preventative maintenance plans to align processes and workflows with College sustainability efforts.
- Provides subject matter expertise, logistical support, and specialized management reporting for facilities construction and planning projects, such as annual Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
- Promotes and publicizes the College’s sustainability initiatives and engages the community in partnerships.
- Serves on the Sustainability Committee and collaborates in creating and implementing sustainability initiatives.
- Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.
- Three years of experience in managing sustainability projects or initiatives.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Valid Florida driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment, with acceptable driving record.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution in engineering, business, environmental science, energy management, or a related field.
- Certification in Sustainability (e.g., International Facility Management Association Sustainability Facility Professional (IFMA SFP) or United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (USGBC LEED) or similar certification in Energy Management (e.g. Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
- Three years of experience in energy management.
- Experience managing building control systems or mechanical systems operations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of energy management systems and utilities operations.
- Knowledge of sustainability principles, trends, and best practices.
- Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled personnel on multiple projects and perform the same or similar work as those supervised.
- Ability to work independently, plan work, and make sound decisions.
- Demonstrated critical thinking, ability to deal with ambiguity, resolve complex problems, and effectively manage projects.
- Excellent Microsoft Office 365 skills (Outlook, Word, Excel) and the ability to become proficient in Teams/Zoom.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently with limited direct supervision.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrates a professional, courteous demeanor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT And SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Works inside, outside and in construction area environments.
- Work may require exposure to sun, rain, wind, heat, cold, and other weather conditions.
- Work may require exposure to elements involving heat, dampness, fumes, dust, and noise, which are present on a frequent basis.
- May be required to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends, and on-call for emergencies.
- Travels overnight regularly within and occasionally out of the state of Florida.
- Travels to College-owned campuses and facilities.
- Required to drive College vehicles.
