Position:  

This position provides health services and health education in a specific educational setting to students who have special needs and/or who are medically fragile, and provides educational support to designated students in a safe learning environment

 

SUPERVISION:

Supervision of LPN is the responsibility of the building principal in collaboration with the school nurse

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. graduate of an accredited nursing program
  2. current LPN licensure with appropriate state board
  3. authorization by Washington State to distribute medications
  4. current first aid card with CPR training and AED certification
  5. skill in written and oral communication
  6. ability to respond to emergency situations in a calm, professional, effective manner
  7. ability to multi-task in a noisy, busy environment
  8. skill with appropriate physical support with students
  9. ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  10. ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA and FERPA guidelines
  11. experience with equipment found in a school setting
  12. ability to provide instruction and manage behavior of small groups of students of all ages and abilities
  13. ability to work as a member of an instructional team
  14. ability to use computers
  15. ability to demonstrate flexibility in a variety of work settings

 

EXPERIENCE:

It is highly desirable that candidates have experience in the following areas:

  1. working in an instructional support role with students
  2. working with students exhibiting challenging/disruptive behaviors
  3. working in a nursing role with children, especially those with medical fragility and/or handicapping conditions

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  1. Implement and monitor student’s educational program under direction of Special Education teacher
    1. be knowledgeable about student's program, goals and objectives
    2. implement programs and provide assistance to students as directed, including communication and specific behavior plans
    3. observe and gather data about student's progress and development
    4. ability to set up and maintain student files, data collection, and records
    5. demonstrate flexibility in working in a changing educational environment
  2. Support students to maintain appropriate behavior and safety in the school environment
    1. follow established discipline guidelines and behavior plan
    2. participate in evaluation of student behavior and needs
    3. maintain professional composure to work through stressful situations with students and staff
  3. Work successfully with students, parents, and staff
    1. establish positive relationships with students
    2. communicate professionally with parents and staff
    3. establish productive role with staff
  4. Provide skilled health care/supervision of health care as directed by the school district nurse to deliver care       to students; may include some or all of the following responsibilities:
    1. implement and document plan of care for each student as designed and agreed upon by the IEP team and assist          school nurse in development, evaluation and monitoring of nursing care plan as required throughout school year
    2. monitor students with seizure disorders and provide emergency management of seizures
    3. administer medication, monitoring efficacy and side effects
    4. assist with students’ personal hygiene needs; may include changing of diapers or clothing
    5. assist students with toileting needs; perform or assist students with clean intermittent catheterization
    6. attend to students’ respiratory needs, administer oxygen, provide suctioning
    7. administer nutritional supplements, monitor dietary requirements, feed students and/or provide tube feedings
    8. provide blood glucose finger stick and monitoring
    9. assist with health instruction and sex education
    10. transfer and/or lift immobile students and attend to special adaptive assistive equipment as required
    11. provide first aid care for ill and injured students in specific settings
    12. monitor communicable diseases within self-contained classroom setting (under direction of school nurse)

Salary Range: $30.21 to $35.02, DOE
