A job with Student Affairs Marketing provides students with the opportunity to work in an agency-like atmosphere where creative problem solving and collaboration lead to the development of effective strategies to build awareness, engagement, and action from target audiences. All Student Affairs Marketing staff contribute to creating, implementing, and assessing various marketing and communications efforts.

Job Summary

The work by the Digital Media Specialist is key to effectively tell the story and market the areas that make up the Division of Student Affairs, while incorporating the IU branding guidelines

Department Specific Responsibilities

Makes tactical, lower-level decisions regarding visual communications and marketing independently. Makes recommendations regarding strategic decisions to the departmental director.
Produces and contributes a number of creative solutions through photography and video that are shared on platforms including, but not limited to, social media, digital and print campaigns, websites, emails, and news stories.
Supervises 3-4 student staff multimedia photographers made up of multimedia photographers, who capture both still photos and videos.
Manages and works with the team to plan, delegate event coverage, and edit photo and video footage in professionally finished products.
Serves as the official photographer of the Division of Student Affairs; covering events (award banquets, student-targeted programming, etc.) and capturing photos of people, campus scenery, and more to be used in various marketing campaigns and communications.
Ensures events and other projects are video recorded and edited into web/mobile-friendly video formats and shared with colleagues and target audiences.
Takes official portraits of full-time staff and student leaders.
Works closely with division partners to strategize, storyboard, shoot, and edit videos for the appropriate platforms based on desired outcome and audience. may delegate basic editing tasks to Photography Assistant(s).
Ensures proper naming, keywording, and archiving procedures are in place for each project.
Creates various videos to document and promote the departments, programs, events, and services within the Division of Student Affairs.
Utilizes web and writing skills to build, maintain, and update select websites for the Division of Student Affairs.
Keeps in contact with departmental colleagues to ensure pages are updated with current and accurate information.
Ensures pages are accessible, event-driven, dynamic, and utilize responsive design principles.
Maintains and utilizes an extensive, organized photo and video library to share with colleagues and partners when requested. Additionally, provides photographs and other resources used in offices, spaces, and rooms throughout campus. Resources include, but are not limited to research, printing, and framing.
Manages the maintenance and updating of existing Web pages, checks and maintains links; monitors Web sites for consistency, cross-referencing, and compliance with university standards for website content and design.

General Responsibilities

Identifies basic, complex, special, and/or urgent photography projects for use in a variety of marketing and communications needs; sets timelines, determines desired images and picture composition, and selects and adjusts subjects, equipment, and lighting to achieve desired artistic effects.
Captures, develops, edits and distributes professional-level film and digital photographs in a timely manner to colleagues and clients, using various software including Adobe Creative Suite, adjusting to formatting specifications of marketing and communications project needs, audiences, and platforms
Regularly consults with marketing and communications staff and other key stakeholders to determine project needs and ensure photographic elements align with strategy and objectives.
Maintains photographic equipment, including photo lab equipment, lenses, lights, and cameras, inventory; performs basic and more complex equipment repairs.
Seeks input from peers and stakeholders on a variety of photography projects to evaluate effectiveness of different aesthetics, lighting, images, etc.
Capturing compelling moments, event coverage, portraits, and high-quality shots for advertising campaign.
May provide organizational training on photography methodology and strategy.
May provide guidance to Photography Assistants or lower-level Photographers.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor’s degree in digital media, film, photography, marketing, communications, related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

2 years of professional marketing and communications experience focusing on photography, video, or digital animation. ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿

Preferred

Significant related professional experience in the fields of photography and video.
Experience in event photography, portraiture, campaign photography, and lighting with strobes and LED lights.

Demonstrates understanding and handling various lighting scenarios Video.
Experience filming using editing Adobe Premiere
Storyboarding, helping with scripts, and directing shoots.
Basic Web editing/HTML and/or Content Management System (CMS) experience.
Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Physical Requirements Lifting heavy camera and lighting travel bags, negotiating all types of terrain inside and outside of buildings around campus as well as on location photo/video assignments, as well as sitting, standing, talking, walking, hearing, seeing, travel, typing

Additional Information

Scope and Impact This position will play a key role in communicating the many services, programs, and Division of Student Affairs departments to the IU community through videos, photography, and other digital platforms. He/she will work closely with the department directors/managers and colleagues within Student Affairs Marketing to achieve the Division’s strategic objectives by creating impactful visuals that tell the story of the Indiana Memorial Union, Student Health Center, and many other areas within the Division of Student Affairs.
