Description

 

The Atlantic Council seeks a talented, entrepreneurial individual to generate and manage foundation revenue for the Atlantic Council. The position will work closely with the Director, Foundation Partnerships to significantly grow revenue for the Council by securing large foundation grants. The individual must be effective in working with staff to coordinate efforts across the organization to help identify, research, cultivate, solicit, and steward foundation relationships.

 

The Associate Director will also work closely with the Development team, program staff, and finance staff to draft competitive foundation grant proposals and budgets, maintain grant renewals, provide strategic guidance on proposal development and identify new funding opportunities while working to grow existing donor relationships. The Associate Director will work with program staff to strategize their short-term and long-term priorities, assist in grants management, and develop fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship plans. The Associate Director will form a diverse portfolio of foundation funding focusing on project and core funding for all programs and centers. be responsible for prospect research to help identify new foundations.

 

The Associate Director will draft relevant correspondence, prepare briefing materials, ensure proposal packages are complete, competitive and on deadline. The individual will also be responsible for cultivating funder relationships by participating in and preparing for cultivation meetings, roundtable discussions, Council events and development trips and work to actively grow the Council’s grant portfolio. The Associate Director will serve as a point-of-contact for the program staff and relevant foundation staff counterparts. The Associate Director will be responsible for tracking donor moves management within internal Council tracking systems and Salesforce.

 

The successful candidate will communicate effectively, be an excellent writer and editor, enjoy and thrive in a dynamic environment, be capable of embracing ambiguity, and be able to manage the high-level multitasking challenges of an entrepreneurial and energetic development office. The candidate must be discreet, engaging, collegial, reliable, exceptionally organized, culturally sensitive and respectful and have an interest in transatlantic relations, national security or foreign policy. The candidate must have experience in handling confidential and sensitive personnel and donor information.

 

The Atlantic Council seeks applicants with diverse backgrounds and offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers starting at $90,000.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Serve as the point-of-contact for various foundations, forming a diverse portfolio of foundation funding, focusing on project and core funding for all Programs and Centers.
  • Actively grow the Council’s foundation grant portfolio, including private, family, and non-US foundations.
  • Plan and execute donor cultivation activities.
  • Support Program staff in developing and editing concept papers, project narratives, concept notes, and full proposals to include developing outlines and templates to insure highly competitive proposals.
  • Lead and execute on prospect research requests from Atlantic Council Programs staff.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Finance to compile supporting documentation for completed applications ensuring that grant proposals, budgets, and required organizational documents are submitted in full compliance with the proposal guidelines and all deadlines are met.
  • Strategize with Programs and Centers to develop core programming, providing a clear blueprint for potential funders.
  • Act as the point-of-contact for Programs and Centers’ development needs.
  • Create tools and resources of best practices in prospect research and proposal writing.
  • Work with Development Operations team to align the Foundations team on Development’s overall strategy, priorities, and operational activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

  • A minimum of five years of work experience in a development department and relevant work experience in cultivating and soliciting foundations.
  • Experience with grants and donor management and the ability to support the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Ability to think strategically and to anticipate and orchestrate next steps.
  • Top-notch organizational skills; ability to initiate, prioritize, and follow through on plans.
  • Ability to balance big-picture thinking with attention to detail.
  • Research skills and computer literacy; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Salesforce and various fundraising CRM systems, and report/query tools preferable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field.
  • Ability to work as a team player.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to the Council’s mission and the ability to translate that commitment into compelling donor communications.
