About the Role

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is hiring a full-time Web Content Specialist (WordPress) to support the transition, management, and development of WordPress-based content focused on Earth science and remote sensing. This role blends hands-on WordPress expertise with strong content management skills and the ability to present complex scientific information in a clear and engaging way for diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities

Technical WordPress Management:

Develop, maintain, and optimize WordPress websites and web pages.

Customize themes and plugins to meet project needs.

Ensure site performance, security, and accessibility compliance.

Troubleshoot technical issues and implement effective solutions.

Manage updates, backups, and site migrations.

Content Development & Editing:

Consolidate and migrate content from existing websites.

Collaborate with program managers, scientists, and subject matter experts to gather and refine content.

Edit and format technical materials for clarity, accuracy, and web usability.

Ensure content aligns with style guidelines and organizational standards.

Optimize content for SEO and user engagement.

Manage content calendars and publishing workflows.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

Work closely with content contributors to understand project goals and requirements.

Translate complex scientific concepts into accessible web content.

Coordinate with team members to ensure timely delivery.

Guide contributors on web best practices.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Earth Science, Geography, Environmental Science, or equivalent experience.

2+ years of experience in WordPress development and administration.

Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and core web technologies.

Familiarity with accessibility standards such as Section 508 and WCAG.

Experience with image editing, optimization, and SEO best practices.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience managing content workflows and publishing processes.

Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Experience troubleshooting custom code, plugin conflicts, and cross-platform issues.

Knowledge of responsive design, accessibility, and performance optimization.

U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency required.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with Drupal CMS, including modules, hooks, custom PHP development, and theming.

Proficiency in PHP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/jQuery, and familiarity with modern frameworks such as React or Vue.

Experience with geospatial data migration and validation, including vector (SHP, GeoJSON), raster (JPG, PNG), and SQL databases.

Knowledge of remote sensing, satellite imagery, or geospatial technologies.

Experience working with scientific or technical content.

Familiarity with data visualization tools and techniques.

Physical Requirements

This role requires regular standing, walking, and use of hands to handle tools or controls. Frequent communication is required, along with occasional reaching, bending, kneeling, or crouching. Vision requirements include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
