This Senior Software Engineer will build software applications and services for Ancestry. You will use a variety of programming languages and technologies to create useful applications, services and tools. The successful candidate will also analyze and update existing applications based on the specific need or create brand new applications. This engineer will work closely with a variety of development teams at Ancestry and will need to take ownership of a problem and drive it through to completion. You must be a self-starter, self-directed, taking personal ownership and aggressively driving problems to resolution. The ability to work well with others and build consensus are required for this position.


This role supports a team that builds high-traffic, customer-facing pages and experiences. You'll be writing both client-side code that runs in the browser and server-side code that integrates with other Ancestry services to retrieve and display data. The pages you work on will help customers view and interact with their genealogy trees, manage stories and photos related to their ancestors, and collaborate with others who share similar family history interests.


What you will do…

  1. Design, build, and maintain reliable, scalable, and secure software services
  2. Contribute to architecture and technical decisions across projects
  3. Analyze, maintain, and improve existing applications, or develop new ones from scratch as needed
  4. Collaborate across engineering, product, and design teams to define and deliver quality solutions
  5. Take ownership of problems and drive them through to resolution
  6. Write clean, maintainable code with unit and integration tests
  7. Participate in code reviews and design discussions
  8. Document your work clearly for other developers to build on
  9. Participate in an on-call rotation to support service availability


Who you are...

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  2. 5+ years of professional experience building service-oriented applications
  3. Strong experience with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
  4. Strong experience with React and Node.js
  5. Comfortable working with Agile development practices
  6. Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests
  7. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  8. Ability to build consensus and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  9. Proactive, self-motivated, and willing to jump in where needed


Nice to have…

  1. Experience with C# and .NET
  2. Familiarity with AWS services and cloud-based architecture
  3. Understanding of cross-cutting concerns (e.g., logging, authentication, caching, performance)

We are pleased to share the base salary range for this position: $111,690 - $139,590 with eligibility for bonus, equity and comprehensive benefits including health, dental and vision.
