The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Materials & Testing Engineering Technician III to join our team responsible for establishing acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products to be incorporated into the NC Highway System and ensuring that these materials and manufactured products meet these criteria and function as intended.
In this role, you will:
- Serve as a member of the Manufactured Products Group of the Materials and Tests team reporting directly to the Metals and Coatings Engineer in our Manufactured Products Group.
- Sample, test, and inspect structural metal products for compliance with NCDOT Specifications, including steel and metal components associated with highway and bridge construction, welding and welding procedure specifications, paint and other coatings, grates, fastener assemblies, and sign structures.
- Provide inspection services and support through onsite construction project attendance during placement of manufactured products.
- Serve as a compliance and assurance inspector at manufacturing plants in multiple states supplying metal products to be incorporated into NCDOT projects.
- Assist our Metals and Coatings Engineer in the completion of inspection duties, including rehabilitation bridge work and impact damage assessments.
- Be cross-trained to assist with other manufactured product inspections.
What You Bring
- Knowledge of the concepts, practices, and theories used in the manufacturing of steel-based products used for roadway construction.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical expert while independently accomplishing assigned tasks and applying specific governing welding codes.
- Demonstrated ability to perform sampling, testing, and inspection duties on construction materials to determine adherence to specifications and governing welding codes.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, officials, and the public.
- Demonstrated ability to perform Nondestructive Testing (NDT), prepare reports, and keep accurate records.
- Computer experience using Microsoft Office, SAP, HiCAMS, Vendor, and SharePoint for creating and modifying queries to produce reports from databases.
- Good math skills.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
- A basic understanding of structural steel fabrication and welding procedures.
- Good visual attention for inspecting welds for cracks that are sometimes less than 0.01” wide and interpreting the display of ultrasonic testing equipment.
- Visual and mental concentration for reading and interpreting plans, shop drawings, and specifications.
- Good manipulative skills to work test equipment.
- Agility to climb and walk on steel beams and girders, sometimes when they are in-place in a structure (fall protection equipment required).
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related field, and
- 3+ years of relevant technician experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Management Prefers
- Candidates with CWI and or NDT certifications.
