Our mission is to build the capacity of low- and moderate-income communities to achieve and sustain economic self-sufficiency with a particular focus on Native Hawaiians.
We operate offices throughout the State of Hawai‘i, providing financial counseling, income support, and employment and entrepreneurship coaching to low- and moderate-income households and communities.

Position Summary:
The Grant Writer manages the development, submission, and reporting of grant applications from various funding sources, including federal, state, city, foundation, and private organizations. The ideal candidate is responsible for securing approximately $5 million in funding annually to support HCA’s community development programs. The Grant Writer will write and submit grant proposals, manage deadlines, and ensure all applications meet the necessary guidelines and requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Grant Research and Proposal Writing
- Research and identify potential grant opportunities from various sources, ensuring they align with HCA’s mission and goals.
- Write clear, compelling, and well-researched grant proposals that meet funder guidelines and deadlines.
- Coordinate with HCA team members to gather necessary information and support for proposals.
- Track progress and manage deadlines for multiple grant applications.
- Partner with Director of Advancement and Community Relations in relationship building of current and potential funders
Grant Management and Compliance
- Track the status of all submitted proposals, ensuring timely reporting and follow-up with funders.
- Collaborate with the finance team to ensure proper budgeting and documentation for grants.
- Maintain organized records of grant applications, funding agreements, and reports.
Fundraising and Relationship Management
- Foster and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential funders, ensuring effective communication and partnership development.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for funders, addressing inquiries and providing necessary documentation.
- In partnership with the Executive Director, Director of Operations, Director of Advancement and Community Relations, represent HCA in meetings with potential funders and stakeholders to support fundraising efforts.
Reporting and Monitoring
- Support the Director of Compliance and Grants in monitoring the progress of funded projects, ensuring compliance with grant agreements and reporting requirements.
- Provide regular updates to the Executive Director on the status of grants and funding.
- Provide Director of Compliance and Director of Data Management with any information needed to ensure timely and accurate reports to funders, outlining outcomes and progress.
Strategic Support
- Contribute to the development of long-term strategies for securing funding and supporting program growth.
- Provide insights and updates to the Executive Director regarding grant-related opportunities and trends.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years of grant writing experience, with a proven track record of securing funding.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent research and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proven experience in grant writing, with a history of successfully securing federal, state, city, foundation, and private grants.
- Ability to secure approximately $5 million annually in grant funding.
- Enjoys working with a team. Communicates effectively and is willing to jump in and support where needed.
Preferred Skills
- Experience working with underserved populations or Native Hawaiian communities.
- Knowledge of community development, housing, or economic development programs.
- Knowledge of grant databases and fundraising platforms.

- Salaried position: range $70,000-$80,000 annually
- Four-Day Workweek: 32 hours a week

Location: Statewide, Hawaii. Hybrid with most of the work being done from your home office. Traveling between islands for in-person events and meetings is required at times.
Applicants must currently live in Hawaii or show proof of having lived in Hawaii and would be moving back to Hawaii for employment.
