Agriberry is hiring a Field Personnel Manager to work closely with the Harvest Supervisor to build Agriberry’s summer harvest team as well as maintain our annual full time field team. Agriberry is a berry farm in Hanover county with a history of youth engagement in the field, with dozens of area high school, college, and transitioning teens and young adults as a part of our summer harvest team. Agriberry also employs seasonal H2A workers, a core group of domestic annual full time field employees, and others interested in direct engagement in their local food systems. An educational background, proficiency in work-related Spanish, and familiarity with agricultural production, particularly in small fruits, are all important.

Primary Function: The personnel manager is a field leadership role with a focus on teambuilding, education, accountability, and personnel management. This position is responsible for assisting with and sharing in the supervision, hiring, onboarding, direction, and training of all field personnel. This includes, but is not limited to, staffing, scheduling, planning and participation in external hiring events, on-site training, orientation, and general team building. Also includes the direct or shared supervision and performance management of field crew staff. The focus of this position is on interfacing with people and staff through mastery of and implementation of Agriberry’s policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and mission as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Works with the Harvest Supervisor to staff and build teams to effectively carry out Agriberry’s harvest. This can include hiring initiatives, interviews, and application review.
- Primarily responsible for training and onboarding all harvesters. Primary training times include late May/early June large team onboarding and fall small team onboarding.
- Assists in overseeing all aspects of harvester quality control, including regular monitoring and feedback.
- Provides regular coaching and feedback to field crew members, issuing the appropriate corrective action and performance management measures.
- Is familiar with our Good Agricultural Practices food safety plan, implements good food safety practices at all times, and reinforced these practices among the staff.
- Ensures all necessary harvesting and plant care is complete, through delegation and direct action, in an educational and developmental manner to direct reports.
- Attends, participates in or leads team meetings on a regular basis, or as needed. Examples include field orientation, and weekly field leadership meetings.
- Assists in regularly assessing the skill and productivity level of field crews, provides recommendations to scheduling accordingly. Supports the Harvest Supervisor in performance reviews of annual staff.
- Prepares and publishes the Field portion of the schedule on a weekly basis, published midday Thursdays.
- Communicates regularly with the rest of the Field Leadership team to coordinate daily flow of tasks. This includes getting information from the Harvest Supervisor as well as distributing that information.
- Shares responsibility with the Harvest Supervisor and Production Manager for Integrated Pest Management, and Pest Control Best Practice recommendations.
- Can be responsible for managing a medium sized (8-20) field crew independently from primary work crew with close communication with Harvest Supervisor on performance, yields, records, and progress.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Good attention to detail, with an ability to plan, prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
- Ability to work autonomously and understand when a superior needs to be involved in decision making.
- Good decision making skills, with the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and implement the best solution to solve problems or challenges.
Professional Requirements:
- High School Degree or equivalent; Undergraduate course work desirable.
- One or more years of experience in farming or agriculture, preferably in a supervisory role
- Valid VA Driver’s License.
- Ability to successfully pass a background check and other pre-employment screening.
- Prior experience with, and the ability to, effectively manage youth workers preferred.
- Work-related Spanish preferred.

- Able to tolerate extreme temperatures.
- Able to lift and carry items up 50 lbs, with assistance if necessary.
- Good physical dexterity and eyesight.

Pay: $34,000.00 - $44,000.00 per year
