Our Mission & Impact

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. began in 2005 serving wounded military Service Members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, PHW has expanded nationwide, establishing its highly successful program in Department of Defense hospitals, warrior transition units, and Veterans Affairs medical centers and clinics.

Organization History

The first Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. (PHW) program started at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., in 2005 by our founder, Ed Nicholson. The official name was established in the fall of 2006, and the organization was incorporated in the State of Maryland in 2007.

Who We Help

Project Healing Waters helps active military service personnel and Veterans in need through a dedicated, developed curriculum of fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying, and fly rod building. In 2023 alone, we helped 6,056 participants comprised of all service eras through the generous work of 6,458 active volunteers.

How We Help

We are a leading nonprofit in the area of therapeutic outdoor recreation, using the sport of fly fishing as an intervention. The restorative healing powers of nature and the outdoors are well-documented: for our Veteran and military participants, the Camaraderie, Connectedness, and community found in our programs, alongside the symbiotic relationship between Veteran and Volunteer, directly correlates to increased sense of belonging, resilience, and post traumatic growth.

Position Overview

Project Healing Waters (PHW) is seeking a passionate and creative Digital Marketing Associate (DMA) to join our dynamic team. The DMA will play a crucial role in ensuring that compelling stories of our programs, regions, and the organization effectively communicated to promote and advance our mission of serving Veterans. This position will report to the Major Gift Officer.

This role ensures collaboration between PHW Program volunteers, Operations staff, and the Marketing and Development teams to ensure that stories and content flow smoothly, Programs are able to maintain social media connectivity across platforms, and effective promotion of local, regional, and national events in line with brand standards. This role will be a part of a highly creative, experienced professionals that utilize photography and videography skills in the pursuit of collaborative storytelling for a two-decades old national organization with compelling and mission-critical stories to tell.

Responsibilities

Social Media & Content Management

  1. Develop and implement a comprehensive social media plan aligned with Project Healing Waters strategic goals and fundraising priorities alongside the Senior Creative Director and Vice President of Development.
  2. Research and analyze social media trends to identify new strategic opportunities.
  3. Work closely with all teams to integrate effective social media management and digital storytelling with other marketing efforts and campaigns.
  4. Coordinate and maintain local, regional, and national blogs and event calendars
  5. Partner with the Senior Creative Director, the VP of Development, and the CEO to prioritize compelling mission-impact stories that promote PHW.

Brand Consistency & Exposure

  1. Ensure that usage of the brand in digital and print communications is in line with brand standards - this will include email signatures, forms, advertising, etc.
  2. Coordinate with programs and regions to ensure that any branded apparel needed for nationwide events follows brand guidelines and is produced on time, on brand, and within budget.
  3. Work with the Procurement & Fulfillment teams to ensure that the PHW Webstore functions smoothly, existing product lines and packaging are kept in stock, and new products are added seasonally.
  4. Partner with staff and volunteers to assist in identification and cultivation of storytelling prospects.
  5. Track performance analytics and provide regular activity reports and engagement projections for the social media portfolio (e.g., Webstore, social media accounts, collaborations, outcomes).

Other:

  1. The DMA will travel occasionally (up to 25%) and work occasional nontraditional office hours including evenings and weekends as necessary.
  2. Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. Understanding of military service organizations (MSOs) and Veteran service organizations (VSOs) preferred.
  2. Familiarity with fly fishing and associated activities preferred.
  3. Experience with Shopify preferred.
  4. Minimum of 2 years of experience in social media management, graphic/apparel design, brand/agency work, or similar fields.
  5. A demonstrated working knowledge of social media, content and/or product creation, and the capability to discuss them knowledgeably.
  6. Ability to build and nurture relationships with the Staff, Volunteers, Participants, and Donors.
  7. Highly organized and proactive self-starter with the ability to successfully work remotely with autonomy and hold oneself accountable to execute on assignments and meet deadlines.
  8. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build authentic relationships and effectively articulate Project Healing Waters mission, impact and programs.
  9. Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute creative plans, identify opportunities, and navigate Participant/Volunteer/Strategic Partner relationships.
  10. Experience working with the Adobe Creative Suite and proficiency in WordPress or similar web platforms.
  11. Passion for serving Veterans and active military personnel, with a commitment to Project Healing Waters mission and values.
  12. Ability to travel as work outside of traditional office hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  13. Must possess a valid state driver’s license
  14. May require participation in events under varying weather conditions.
  15. May require lifting/carrying items up to 50 pounds.
