Job Description:

Under the general direction of Manager of Educational Technology and Innovation, the 3D Design and Printing Technician supports the creation of digital and physical models that enhance teaching and learning in the health sciences. This role involves developing accurate 3D assets, preparing files for printing, and producing prototypes that contribute to educational effectiveness.


The role involves collaboration with subject matter experts, assisting with digital asset management, maintaining intellectual property records, and organizing digital resources. In addition to production tasks, the technician researches how 3D technologies best contribute to health sciences education, examines how similar tools are applied at other institutions, and evaluates scope and cost efficiency for projects. The position also includes developing and delivering presentations on 3D printing to demonstrate how it can be applied to teaching and learning in the health sciences. The ideal candidate should have experience in 3D digital design and printing, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to innovation, efficiency, and advancing teaching and learning in the health sciences.

Knowledge of:

  1. Creating visualization components to aid the teaching and learning process



Required Software:

  1. Content creation tools: Blender, Fusion 360, Meshmixer, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar software.
  2. 3D mesh acquisition/reconstruction, such as Flexscan, Artec Studio, Metashape, Photoscan, 3D Slicer, or similar software.
  3. Microsoft Office Suite


Skill:

  1. Individuals must possess the creativity, knowledge, and ability to model, design, and create learning components using visualization tools.
  2. Experience doing research, presentations, and crafting reports for disseminated projects.


Ability to:

  1. Demonstrate a commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  1. Minimum High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Required Education/Degree required to be successful in the classification.



Experience or Training:

  1. Experience required to be successful in the classification.
  2. 2 years of related work experience required.
  3. Experience with 3D technologies applied to education.
  4. Experience with 3D software and 3D design.
  5. Experience with 3D printers and scanners.
  6. Experience with 3D animation and rendering process.
  7. Experience with 3D design techniques.


Special Requirements, Licenses, and Certifications:

  1. Travel may be required for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and/or events in support of the overall objective of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  1. Preference will be given to Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of related work experience.
  2. Experience working in a health sciences educational setting.
  3. Experience interacting with students, faculty, and administration.

Essential Job Duties


Key Responsibilities

Design realistic and accurate 3D assets to be used in medical environments:

  1. Develop 3D mesh construction based on 3D scans and modeling.
  2. Design CAD designs for customized medical projects.
  3. Optimize 3D models for use in various technologies (VR/AR, web-based, mobile, print, etc.).
  4. Design medical reconstructions for education.
  5. Structure design pipelines and steps of production for 2D & 3D assets to maximize efficiency based on unique project needs.
  6. Employ user experience (UX) design principles for end-user advanced control and ease of use.


Key Responsibilities

Create technical 3D animations:

  1. Construct animated assets with accurate biomechanical motions with the support and collaboration of subject matter experts.
  2. Design 3D animations to visually explain medical procedures.
  3. Develop 3D graphical animations for informational purposes.
  4. Consider composition, realism, texture, color, lighting, and timing.


Key Responsibilities

Compile Research and Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts:

  1. Compiles research for each project on how 3D technologies can best support health sciences education, reviews how similar tools are used at other institutions, and evaluates project scope and cost efficiency.
  2. Develop innovative solutions and/or technical tools for faculty and students on research project prototypes.
  3. Support faculty and student research and grant-funded projects through 3D tools, technologies, recommendations, and industry expertise.
  4. Review faculty and student manuscripts for accuracy on components related to 3D projects.
  5. Take part in authoring for publication and presenting at conferences for wider distribution of projects and how they enhance teaching and learning.


Key Responsibilities

Lead staff and faculty development sessions/workshops on topics related to:

  1. 3D scanning.
  2. 3D design.
  3. 3D printing.
  4. Other topics as related to role or as assigned.


Key Responsibilities

Data Management & Organization:

  1. Organization and management of digital assets and archiving in a searchable format.
  2. Maintain records on intellectual property (IP) for purchased assets.
  3. Save back-up copies in organized digital files.
  4. Research and procure 3D printer supplies with fiscal responsibility, ensuring all purchases. align with project needs and maintaining accurate inventory control.
  5. Contribute to quarterly reports to support overall CETL.
