The Challenge
We're looking for an entry-level Engineering Technician to join our District 1 Engineering team.
In this role, you will:
- Assist engineers and senior technicians in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors.
- Assist on minor to complex projects.
- Lead inspections through every construction project phase to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Conduct routine compliance inspections with contract agreements, standard, codes, permits, and specifications.
- Perform engineering calculations, computations, and computer/iPad data entry.
- Work with counties, municipalities, contractors, and field support staff as a permitting technician to establish compliance with applicable engineering standards and guidelines.
- Assist with plan reviews for subdivisions, utility installations, and roadway improvements.
- Prepare cost estimates.
- Process permits, including driveway, utility, and non-utility encroachment agreements, road additions, and abandonments, and other records and reports.
What You Bring
- Knowledge and understanding of the general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
- Computer skills using laptops, iPads, and business and drafting software, including Microsoft Office.
- Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
- Math function experience (i.e. algebra, geometry, and trigonometry).
- Communication skills to establish and maintain positive communications among coworkers, technicians, contractors, and the public; and to communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
- Ability to work safely in office and outside environments with exposure to hazards on construction sites, including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, standing, and strength to lift 50 pounds.
- You apply a safety philosophy and safety program to all operations.
- Open to working nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Safety toe shoes.
Education & Experience
- Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
