About MSF-USA | Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization providing medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care in over 70 countries. We were formed in France in 1971 as an association by a group of doctors and journalists to go to emergency situations and to treat patients with dignity while bearing witness independently of geopolitical boundaries. MSF is now a global movement of more than 25 MSF organizations, working in over 70 countries. We cooperate as an international, independent, medical humanitarian association that offers medical assistance to populations in distress, victims of natural or manmade disasters, and civilian victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, age, gender/sex, national or ethnic origin, color, disability, sexual orientation, genetic information, or political affiliation and provides assistance to the population in distress and intervenes worldwide. MSF staff also “bear witness” by speaking out about our work and what is experienced on the ground, not only to draw the world’s attention to crises, but to stand in solidarity with our patients and colleagues who are experiencing these emergencies firsthand.

We welcome candidates who bring a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to join us in working toward MSF’s social mission.

About the Department:

The Communications Department is responsible for developing a coherent voice and delivering clear public messages to inform both US and international audiences of MSF, its field activities and the humanitarian principals that underpin them; to raise awareness about the plight of the populations we serve; to promote public communication aimed at exposing and describing the field reality, including dilemmas and challenges; and to garner public understanding for our advocacy messages related to field operational concerns and the Access Campaign, via the media, print and digital channels, public awareness and advocacy campaigns, conferences, etc.

About the Project:

The Associate Editor will curate and produce original reporting on MSF’s responses to humanitarian emergencies for multiple digital and print channels, including our website doctorswithoutborders.org, a quarterly magazine, and other publications. You will have excellent editing, writing, and research skills to contribute toward sharing MSF’s story with the world. You will work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment covering a range of topics, including the health impacts of conflict, forced displacement, natural and human-made disasters. As part of the communications department’s editorial team, you’ll ensure that our reportage and other creative pieces are timely, well-composed, factually accurate, and in keeping with MSF’s distinct voice and brand.

Daily Activities & Responsibilities:

  • You will report to the deputy editor and work in close collaboration with the rest of the editorial unit, including the social media and audiovisual teams
  • Reviewing, editing, and publishing articles and other multimedia content produced from MSF’s medical humanitarian projects around the world
  • Reporting and writing articles for MSF-USA's digital and print channels to amplify communications and advocacy priorities

  • Maintaining high editorial standards for communications across MSF-USA channels
  • Maintaining an editorial calendar for communications content
  • Staying informed about MSF operations worldwide and related news affecting the humanitarian sector
  • Analyzing and responding to content metrics to ensure impact and identify opportunities for improvement

Desired Qualifications & Experience:

  • 3+ years of relevant experience editing and writing for digital channels, preferably with a nonprofit or media organization
  • Experience with editing, copy editing, reporting, writing, and fact-checking
  • Experience working in a website content management system (Drupal)
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills; flawless grasp of English grammar; and familiarity with style guide usage
  • Familiarity with SEO principles and best practices
  • Ability to work well both independently and in collaboration across teams and functions
  • Commitment to MSF’s humanitarian principles and to upholding diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • High level of organizational skill, with the ability to multi-task, prioritize competing demands, and respond to urgent news developments
  • A team player, comfortable in a fast-paced, “all hands on deck” environment
  • Broad knowledge of or interest in international affairs, humanitarian issues, and global health
  • Photo and video editing experience, with a keen eye for detail (preferred)
