PROOFREADER (REMOTE)

 

DEPARTMENT: Codification Operations

REPORTS TO: Project Manager

CLASSIFICATION: Full Time Non- Exempt

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

A PROOFREADER is responsible for proofreading scanned and edited documents for accuracy in grammar and content; checking pagination and formatting errors; finding typographical, semantic, and formatting errors in legal documents; and updating PDF files. They need to understand the entire process and the way codes and enactments (changes to the code) work so that they can catch not only typos but also codification mistakes and/or omissions in the editors’ work. The primary responsibility is making sure that the content of the code matches the enactments a jurisdiction has passed and that all enactments are codified correctly.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OR TASKS PERFORMED:

  • Expertise with standard proofreading concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Copy edit marked-up material with outputs and, where necessary, mark corrections using standard proofing notations.
  • Check spelling and stylization of documents using internal style guides.
  • Apply standard grammar and punctuation conventions, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Check formatting and layout of pages, including indents, typeface, heads and corners, dateline, and page numbers, marking corrections as required.
  • Communicate in a timely and effective manner to resolve questions and to ensure that errors are properly corrected.
  • Ability to contribute and collaborate on multiple tasks in a small team.
  • Manage job status in an online production workflow tool.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills:

  • 3-5 years of prior proofreading experience in a technical environment or equivalent educational experience.
  • Excellent reading comprehension and comparison skills.
  • Good command of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a remote team environment with minimal supervision; yet be self-directed and proactive.
  • Experience working on a tablet, specifically using the Adobe Pro software or other PDF markup tools preferred.
  • Proficient working knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of Content Management, Asset Repositories, and/or XML publishing systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with Adobe FrameMaker or Oxygen XML Editor a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This is an office environment with a moderate noise level. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand while reading and typing on a computer. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.
