Objective:
The Marketing Communications Manager (volunteer/remote) will develop and implement the marketing and communications strategy for our nonprofit animal sanctuary, enhancing our brand visibility and engagement with the community. This role is pivotal for developing and executing communication strategies that promote our mission, increase awareness of our programs, and drive fundraising efforts. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a background in marketing communications, and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing communications strategy that aligns with the sanctuary's mission and goals.
- Supervise the creation and distribution of marketing materials, including press releases, newsletters, social media content, and website updates.
- Cultivate relationships with local media, community organizations, and stakeholders to promote the sanctuary's mission and initiatives.
- Monitor and analyze marketing metrics, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
- Supervise the MarCom Coordinator, providing guidance and support in their daily tasks and professional development.
- Oversee the social media strategy, including setting goals, defining messaging, and reviewing content created by the coordinator.
- Review scheduled posts by the MarCom Coordinator before they are shared, to ensure they are appropriately hashtagged, tagged with users in the photo and photo credit is given, assigned a location, free of typos, and no controversial language is used (culturally or politically) without approval from one of the sanctuary’s directors.
- Ensure cohesive brand representation across digital platforms, aligning website content with social media, email campaigns, and other digital marketing efforts. Actively engage with directors of the sanctuary for feedback and implement innovative digital strategies to enhance brand visibility and resonance with the target audience. Posts should follow requirements outlined in the “Social Media Overview” document.
- Optimize platform affordances such as pictures, link, bio, reviews, and other various affordances to maximize and foster community engagement.
- Collaborates with the MarCom Coordinator and directors across the organization such as, but not limited to, Administration, Fundraising, Programs and Education, and Sanctuary Operations to receive input on the next scheduled post(s), prints, etc., to support each of their advertising functions such as upcoming events, fundraisers, volunteer days, staffing needs, etc.
- Attends regular meetings with managers and directors team to get updates on what everyone is working on at the sanctuary, and communicate department needs.
Qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older
- Bachelor’s degree in PR, Marketing or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Basic computer competency
- Social media management experience (required)
- Graphic Design experience (required)
- Exceptional communication and writing skills with a keen eye for detail (required)
- Social media management experience and familiarity with social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok (required)
- Familiarity with CRM systems and marketing automation tools such as Mailchimp (required)
- Familiarity with a non-profit organization (preferred)
- Management experience a plus
- Flexibility (required): this role is a start-up position, and is the first of its kind for the sanctuary, so we will be developing it as we go.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects on your own schedule.
Training:
- General Volunteer Orientation
- Animal Safety Orientation (if planning to come on-site to record content, not required - this role is designed to be filled remotely)

Time and Place:
- Primarily virtual work (though volunteers can also come to sanctuary as well, but not required)
Commitment:
- 6 month commitment, 4-10 hours/week
Supervision:
- Direct supervision by Director of Programs and Executive Director; indirect supervision by Sanctuary and Board Directors.
