The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (STBF) is a private grant-making foundation with a U.S. home office in Omaha, NE and a global home office in Kigali, Rwanda. Our staff is comprised of over 80 individuals across two continents. With annual spending in excess of $1 billion, we are one of the largest private foundations in the U.S.
The Foundation is unusual for donors of such size as we have only two main areas of grantmaking: (1) supporting women’s health and reproductive freedom in the U.S. and around the world, and (2) enabling low-income students in Nebraska to attend and succeed in college. Unlike most foundations, STBF will not exist in perpetuity. After Mr. Buffett passes away (he is currently 94 years old), the Foundation’s grantmaking will grow substantially, then eventually sunset after approximately 10-15 years.

The compensation for this position is $30.00 per hour.
Unit Summary
The U.S. Programs Intern will be a member of the U.S. Programs unit. The U.S. Programs (USP) unit manages the Foundation’s grantmaking to ensure equitable, dignified, and supported access to women's health and reproductive freedom in the United States. Our unit supports numerous organizations in two main areas (or portfolios) of reproductive health, access, and justice movements. The first, referred to as Patients and Access, partners with individuals, health centers, clinicians, training facilities, and related research. The second, Social Change, supports organizations focused on building longer-term systems change through social support, addressing public policy advocacy, communications and messaging, movement building, and litigation.
Job Overview
Reporting to a Program Officer, the U.S. Programs Intern will assist program officers with preparation of strategy documents regarding the Foundation’s investments to support communications (media, social media, and messaging) infrastructure in the reproductive health, rights, and justice field. This will include stakeholder interviews, close work with relevant program officers, and reviews of grantee proposals and reports to understand the nature of our existing grantmaking before making recommendations to Foundation leadership for additional investments.
