WHO WE ARE!
Magazzino Italian Art Museum is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to advancing scholarship and public appreciation of postwar and contemporary Italian art in the United States.
We are seeking an experienced individual with prior experience in museum management for the role of Director.
WHAT YOU WILL DO!
- The Director collaborates closely with the Trustees of the Foundation to advance the museum's mission, execute, and garner support for its programs, and achieve the objectives outlined in its strategic plan. Responsibilities extend to maintaining and enhancing successful initiatives such as the Lecture Series, and the Scholar-in-Residence programs.
- The Director serves as the public face of the organization to our varied stakeholders, including the artistic community, donors, grant makers, sponsors, and partners. You are responsible for the overall strategic development, leading both short and long range planning, operational management, managing and augmenting our financial resources, spearheading fundraising, facilities oversight, and oversight of the artistic initiatives of the organization.
- The Director holds a pivotal role in overseeing the management of all personnel, operations, and facilities within the institution.
- The Director provides oversight and coordination for all the museum's programming, including both off-site and on-site exhibitions, publications, educational programs, and library and archives.
Administration and Operation:
- Oversee and participate in fiscal management of the organization by building an annual, as well as departmental budget. Supervise payroll, and take active role in financial planning, annual audit, and asset management.
- Review, revise, and execute annual budget and recommend actions needed to achieve strategic goals; ensure to work within estimated annual operating budget.
- Manage and supervise staff including hiring, oversight, and facilitation of professional development opportunities.
- Performing regular staff evaluations and creating or revising job descriptions.
- Manage all consultants, and vendors, and ensure proper contract processes are followed.
- Work closely with architects and contractors on facility needs and/or expansions.
- Ensure compliance with national, state, and local labor, environmental, and safety laws and protocols, including but not limited to OSHA and ADA requirements.
- Track, actively oversee and effectively communicate progress and milestones to the Trustees, Advisory Board, Donors, and other constituents.
Development, Donor Relations, and Institutional Advancement:
Take an active role in identifying potential funding sources, to contribute to the sustainability and growth of the museum's resources:
- Oversee a robust fundraising plan that builds on Magazzino’s strength with institutional donors.
- Cultivate and acquire new major gifts from individuals.
- Attend meetings with potential donors.
- Participate in the planning and execution of programs.
- Develop profitable special events.
- Expand online donor campaigns.
- Work closely with the Trustees to create vehicles for capital campaigns and endowment gifts.
- Collaborate with staff to develop further support from government and foundation sources.
Communications and Marketing:
Work closely with the Communications and Marketing Team to develop effective communications and marketing materials and strategies related to exhibitions and programs:
- Contribute to museum publications and communications efforts, including print and digital.
- Oversee communications and marketing strategies to bolster the museum's image, identity, and donor prospects.
- Develop methodologies to increase visibility locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Introduce all our exhibitions and events.
- Serve as public face of the organization, acting as a local and national presence who communicates impact, strengthens partnerships, and cultivates relationships within the arts; and with community leaders, artists, collectors, galleries, donors, and grantees.
- Deepen & refine internal and external communications to ensure consistent, compelling messaging of Magazzino’s mission, vision, and achievements.
- Collaborate with PR team to create and execute public relations and crisis response strategies.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure promotion of programs and initiatives.
Exhibitions & Programs:
In collaboration with the Trustees, other stakeholders, and outside curatorial consultants, you will help to shape the museum's artistic direction and long-term exhibition schedule. This involves:
- Oversee two planned exhibitions annually with accompanying publications.
- Oversee exhibition proposals, 3-4 years in advance of exhibition dates for review and approval by the Trustees

- Oversee the installation of assigned exhibitions traveling to the museum from other institutions.
- Oversee and collaborate with appropriate team members to develop & produce exhibition-related programming and educational materials.
- Oversee information regarding exhibitions for website and social media content.
- Oversee professional care of loaned artworks.
- Oversee Monitor & track exhibition budgets & expenditures; identify funding opportunities, and actively seek external funding for exhibitions & programs.
- Oversee all organizational aspects with Museums or other venues in the event of touring Magazzino’s organized exhibitions

WHAT YOU BRING!
- Advanced degree in Art History, Museum Studies or Management, or related field preferred
- 10+ years of experience in an arts or cultural nonprofit, with 5+ in a leadership position with clear accomplishments (ie in museum programming, financial growth, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience in museum management, including personnel supervision, strategic planning, and budget oversight
- Proven record in curatorial work, exhibition development, and project management
- Excellent verbal communication and people skills required
- Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends, must be present for public programs as needed, to assist with visitors, presenters, or guests
- Italian language skills are not required but are a plus
- Budgeting, staffing and personnel management experience
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including artists, donors, and the public
- Experience in fundraising, donor relations, and grant writing
- Proficiency in using digital and social media platforms for marketing and communication purposes
- Commitment to fostering inclusivity and diversity within museum programming and outreach efforts
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment and adapt to the evolving needs of the institution
