Job Description:

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Assistant Director, Security. The Assistant Director of Security will provide leadership and direct management and day to day oversight of the physical Security team, including Managers, Supervisors and Officers.

Regularly interacts with Museum and Security leadership, including the Associate Director of Security, Managers, Supervisors, Control Room Operators and Officers in order to execute day-to-day functions of the team and the Museum. Regularly interacts with MoMA’s Building Operations, Visitor Engagement, Membership, Retail and Special Events departments in support of the Museum’s public operations. Applies coaching, staff development, strategic planning, and emergency response experience to enhance overall departmental effectiveness, team morale, and professionalism within a multi-cultural museum environment. Applies knowledge and experience in managing all security operations (public and non public) along with identifying risks, inefficiencies and improvements within the team and internal processes.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Directs day to day oversight and management of the Museum’s physical Security staff and assists with incident/emergency response.
  • Develops, maintains, and assists in implementing all policies, procedures, training and staffing for all physical Security staff (gallery, public space, retail).
  • Drives the implementation of the MoMA Security department strategic plan, with senior Security leadership, to maintain and effectively safeguard the Museum, its employees, trustees, visitors, physical properties, and the art.
  • Manages service contracts for security providers whose services involve, use or impact the Museum’s physical security operation.
  • Oversees and manages scheduling systems and processes for all Security personnel, including daily deployment sheets and overtime allocation and management.
  • Participates and assists in the budget process, specifically in the areas of standard and overtime needs and staffing for exhibitions, public programs, and special events.
  • Assists with the overall management of the Museum’s fire life safety program in partnership with the Associate Director and Director.
  • Participates in recruitment for select open positions and makes hiring recommendations or decisions for staff vacancies; supervises assigned staff on daily basis, providing relevant training, feedback, guidance, professional development, etc.; ensures compliance with and comprehension of Museum policies and relevant collective bargaining agreement; manages the constructive discipline process, as warranted; conducts annual performance reviews with direct staff; etc.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with all direct reports and other department heads to ensure good day–to-day situational awareness and effectiveness.
  • Works collaboratively with a diverse and multicultural community.
  • Regularly coordinates and collaborates with Building Operations, Exhibitions, Membership, Visitor Services, Retail, and all other MoMA departments to ensure effective and safe operations.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Supervisory responsibilities: In conjunction with senior Security leadership, is responsible for and oversees Security Managers, Supervisors and Security Officers located at two locations in the NYC area.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum eight to 10+ years managerial experience in the security field, or equivalent. Relevant physical security and operational experience within a similar size team and/or department.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, and strong oral, written communication, and project management skills to include being detail oriented, organized and possessing strong time management skills.
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously, while meeting demanding deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success in team building and collaborating across departments.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of management principles and practices and personnel supervision and staff development.
  • Experience responding to unforeseen emergencies, identifying future risks, and providing counter strategies.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and evening hours to support after hours events, extended operating hours and weekends at the Museum. The scheduled days off for this position are Sunday and Monday, which are subject to change given the needs of the department.
  • Background in law enforcement or military is a plus. Fire safety director license preferred.
  • Proficient in Google platforms and/or Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to liaison both internally and with external organizations such as law enforcement and counterparts in both public and private sectors.
  • MoMA participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore, if hired, the individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.

Reports to: Associate Director and/or the Director of Security

Salary Range: Minimum of $135,000 to a maximum of $155,000 per annum
