Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $77,000 to $80,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $77,000 to $139,200/year.

By working with local, regional, national and international print and electronic news media, the office strives to generate media coverage of the extraordinary development of UCSB as a leading research institution and of the people, programs, events and activities that distinguish the campus. In addition to its public information and media relations functions, the office designs and maintains the UCSB website and "The Current" news site about the University and the campus community, and produces major university publications.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Office of Public Affairs & Communications (PINF/OPAC) within the Division of Institutional Advancement (IA) at UC Santa Barbara is seeking a full-time Web Developer to see through technical execution of the office's vision for an innovative, user-friendly, and unified university web presence. Working collaboratively with departmental, divisional, and campus-wide colleagues, the Web Developer's primary responsibilities include: - Defining/Refining a central UC Santa Barbara web development framework and associated standards. - Ensuring intended design, UX, UI, performance, and accessibility of new and existing web properties via front- and back-end (full stack) development. - Developing new and exciting interactive experiences. The ideal candidate has advanced technical skills; is highly experienced and skilled in Drupal; understands and applies modern day UX and web design principles, best practices, and conventions; communicates clearly and effectively; thrives in a team environment; is solutions-oriented; wants to build best-in-class digital experiences. In all duties, acts with a high degree of initiative, motivation, flexibility and self-direction and an appreciation and understanding of higher education and academic values. Reports to the Chief Digital Officer in supporting departmental (ex: news.ucsb.edu), central (ex: ucsb.edu) and select divisional (Institutional Advancement) web initiatives.


Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  2. 4-6 years of experience implementing and using modern web development workflows and operations in multi-dev hosting environments such as Pantheon, version control via Git, and build tools such as Github, Docker, and Composer.
  3. 1-3 years of experience implementing and using web analytics tools to generate insight that leads to improved website experiences. Demonstrate agility in carrying out a variety of tasks.
  4. 1-3 years Drupal expertise, including Drupal 10/11, with demonstrated experience in custom theme development and management of core and custom modules.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Working knowledge of web applications, programming and scripting languages, JSON, CSS, CSS3, cross-browser compatibility, HTML5, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, SASS, pre-processing, security principles, and web user interface design (UI).
  2. Working knowledge of other CMS systems such as WordPress (advanced knowledge a plus).
  3. A meticulous attention to detail and quality assurance, including accessibility standards.
  4. Knowledge of SEO strategy and tactics a plus.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  1. 40% Web Development Framework & Standards - - Evolve and champion the UCSB Web Theme framework, currently a Drupal-10 -based site-building package that enables developers and content managers across campus to build crisp, clean, contemporary, on-brand, and intelligently organized websites in reduced time. - Partner with web colleagues from around campus to identify user needs and to build and support new page and content types that provide value to campus content managers and website visitors alike. - Identify, develop and implement modules and other CMS functions that sustain and create efficiencies in page/site development process. - Provide in-depth technical documentation and training on all of the above. - Identify and address opportunities to improve web development workflows and processes across campus, with the goal of creating a more unified and integrated web presence for the university. - Comply with University of California accessibility guidelines and ensure that websites created via framework adhere to WCAG 2.1 Level AA Success requirements. - Provide partnership and thought leadership to technical colleagues around campus through individual consultation and ongoing participation in the university's Web Standards Group (WSG). Champion OPAC's and IA's brand and web standards in these forums. - Continually evolve the UCSB Web Theme framework to keep up with user needs, along with latest web conventions and technologies. - Maintain strong professional relationships with the greater campus web development community to drive innovation and transformation across university websites. - Consult with stakeholders across campus to identify additional opportunities for framework improvement; provide project scope and development timelines accordingly.


  1. 40% Website Creation / Maintenance / Updates - - Translate requirements, wireframes, and visual design for new websites (or website updates) into final presentation: - - Determine feasibility and technical requirements of projects given stated goals. - Formulate strategies and criteria for selecting appropriate platforms and technologies to obtain desired design, UX, UI, and related website results. - Design, code, test, publish and maintain sites according to project specifications, group standards, user insight, and industry best practices. - Provide solutions for bugs identified in user and/or QA testing. - Maintain cross-browser compatibility and mobile responsiveness, along with adherence to accessibility and performance standards. - Implement and maintain preferred analytics tools (ex: Google Analytics). - Write and maintain web applications as needed. - Provide project scope and development timelines.- - Assist divisional content managers in making website updates, as needed. - Provide technical consultation to divisional and campus wide developer colleagues in support of their stated website goals/needs. Direct support will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.


  1. 20% Interactive Experiences - - Support Senior Web Designer and content production team in determining feasibility of and subsequently building innovative digital experiences that bring UC Santa Barbara's story/stories to life in exciting new ways. - Stay on top of latest trends and best practices in web design and development; educate colleagues accordingly.
