DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES:

 

  • Obtains, receives, relays, and acts upon oral or written instructions from the dispatcher, switch foreman, yard master, or other personnel, in person or by other communication devices like radio, beeper, telephone
  • Operate various designs of track switches and derails in order to change the route of the engine or cars within yards or on the road
  • Check switch points to make sure switch is properly aligned
  • Observe and monitor track conditions (e.g. broken rails, defective switches, weather-related problems, etc.)
  • Inspect train cars or other equipment before leaving the yard or when required, and apply and release hand brakes
  • Observe the condition of passing train and report results to appropriate personnel
  • Get on and off equipment while train is performing industrial station or yard switching, to set or release hand brakes or other duties
  • Ride moving cars by hanging on grab irons or ladders, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Prepare required reports such as time slips, delay reports, accident reports, etc.
  • Observe, interpret and relay hand, lantern, and other signals affecting the movement of the train, and judge and control the speed and clearance distance of cars.
  • Removes and replaces track components (e.g. rails, ties, bars, etc.) using various power and non-power hand tools
  • Lift and carry track material, cut brush, trees, and vegetation, and clear the right-of-way of litter and other cargo spillage, dig trenches either by hand or using a backhoe or trencher; climb and paint signal poles
  • Repair and general maintenance of signal systems
  • Responsible for inspecting and properly repairing the following systems on locomotives: running gear, including wheels, springs, hangers, brake rigging traction motors
  • Must be able to test and repair brake systems, safety appliances, couplers and draft systems, air compressors and safety valves, lube oil pumps filter systems, fuel systems, radiators, and shutters.

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Other qualifications include mechanical and electrical aptitudes, climb poles and / or work out of basket on boom truck
  • Able to read, write and communicate English
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, rain, snow, and wind
  • Available to work “on call” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Able to arrive at the assigned work location within 90 minutes of notification to report to work
  • Able to travel to job site around the seniority region
  • Able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and up to 90 pounds infrequently
  • Able to distinguish among red, blue, green and yellow colors, and am able to see at night
  • Able to hear and, with training distinguish auditory signals
  • Able to identify, interpret, and use hand signals
  • Able to use hands to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling
  • Able to work at various heights above the ground
  • Able to perform work on uneven surfaces
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Class "A" Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is strongly preferred
  • Previous construction work experience and familiarity with operating heavy equipment.
