GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Park Superintendent and Assistant Park Superintendent, this position performs highly complex (senior-level) operations work in a state park including overall operations, interpretation, preservation and supervision of the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm and also other related park interpretive needs. This unique historic facility portrays the lifestyles of a typical German farm family in eastern Gillespie County at the turn-of-the-century (1915-1918) in an authentic farm setting involving 3rd person interpretation. Position provides living history demonstrations to the public by using a variety of artifacts and/or replicas, interprets life on the farm using appropriate methods in relationship to the area, and conducts interpretive tours on a daily basis. Provides quality internal and external customer service. Dresses in authentic period clothing, manages staff and volunteers, cares for farm livestock, maintains and cleans historic buildings, maintains farm grounds, and performs routine facility maintenance on historic structures and equipment. Plans, researches, and implements outreach and educational programs for all ages. Helps oversee a large historic park collection and prepares annual inventories. Responsible for daily administrative management duties of site, park reports, and fiscal control in a computer system. Other duties include site promotion, marketing, interviewing employees, volunteer recruitment and supervision, evaluating direct reports and volunteers, work scheduling, preparation of assigned reports, assists with managing site budget, purchasing, inventory control, maintaining standard operating procedures for the living history farm, training of staff and volunteers, implementation of a safety program, park outreach, park programs and special events. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

 

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

 

 

Experience:

Two years experience in (1) natural/cultural resource management; or (2) interpretation or education; or (3) general maintenance; or (4) public safety; or (5) promotions or public relations or marketing.

 

Licensure:

If driving is required, applicant must possess a valid State driver’s license.

 

Must possess or be able to obtain, within 90 days of employment, a valid Food Handler Certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

 

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required certification.

 

 

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

Education:

One year of experience in farm and livestock management, may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 hours.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Experience in park interpretation and/or education.

 

 

Experience in living history interpretation.

 

 

Experience with farm and livestock work and/or management.

 

 

Experience as a Supervisor or Team Leader.

 

 

Experience in facility, equipment or grounds maintenance and repairs.

 

 

Licensure:

Current National Association of Interpretation (NAI) Interpreter Certification.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of English, spelling, math and writing skills;

 

Knowledge of interpretive techniques such as 3rd person living history, exhibit development, and publication development;

 

Knowledge of Texas history ca. 1915-1918, specifically related to the German influence in the Texas Hill Country and in eastern Gillespie County;

 

Knowledge of cultural traditions, historic practices and experiences;

 

Knowledge to properly maintain artifacts, collections and historic property;

 

Knowledge of authentic farming practices for the depicted time period;

 

Knowledge of authentic foodway preparation and preservation practices;

 

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

 

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

 

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

 

Skilled in interpretive programming and development;

 

Skill in working with livestock such as milk cows, swine, sheep, horses, mules and all associated farm animals;

Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, weed trimmers, tractors, chainsaws, farm equipment and blacksmithing tools;

 

Skill in performing minor maintenance to buildings, facilities and equipment;

 

Ability to maintain and keep records;

 

 

Ability to manage budget and purchases for site;

 

 

Ability to work as a member of a team;

 

 

Ability to work well with diverse groups and age ranges;

 

Ability to speak in front of large crowds and present interpretive programs;

Ability to effectively and properly demonstrate various historic living history activities to the public using a variety of artifacts, replicas, and related techniques;

 

Ability to assist with various park duties such as maintenance, administration, or customer service;

 

Ability to use a wood-burning stove and primitive types of farm and household equipment, machines, and appliances;

 

 

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

 

 

Ability to work with various farm equipment and make repairs;

 

 

Ability to perform minor maintenance to buildings, facilities and equipment using carpentry, electrical, plumbing and mechanic skills;

 

 

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

 

 

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to work in a public park;

 

 

Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

 

 

Required to adjust to changing schedules;

 

 

Required to work overtime during peak visitation periods;

 

 

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

 

 

Required to stand and perform work outdoors for long periods of time;

 

 

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

 

 

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

 

 

Required to travel <5%;

 

 

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;
