Amazon is now searching for an innovative and solutions-oriented Sr. Operations Engineer to be a part of our global initiative of developing and delivering the next generation of world-class fulfillment systems. Successful candidates are natural self-starters who have prior engineering experience in the integrated automation project life cycle, including development, design, implementation, enhancement, and support.
This position is responsible for coordination, communication, risk management and for serving as liaison between Fulfillment Center Operations, Program Management, Product Management, Operations Engineering, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering and Product IT. This role will require the ability to build relationships and capture and synthesize the voice of the customer. Their primary goal is to own the coordination and execution of installation, commissioning, and performance ramp up of the product in the field allowing the engineering and product team to focus on the system performance improvement and optimization. In parallel with the Product Beta performance ramp, the PLM will work with the RDE team to share lessons learned and best practices that enable product deployment at scale.
As a Sr. Operations Engineer focusing on PreCon and Construction for Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging Launch (MSPL), you will be able to work with some of the most talented engineers in the design, development, and delivery of new technological systems around the globe. You will lead construction of complex cross-functional projects or programs that focus on the building of new, the alteration of existing, and the closing of end-of-life material handling and technology systems. As a working leader, you are able to take the lead on the implementation and delivery of large system designs and advanced technology in ambiguous and complex problem spaces. You integrate systems for safety, security, stability, and efficiency. You participate in the full system development life cycle, working within broadly defined parameters, including test plan execution and solution quality needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Overseeing construction engineering, preconstruction planning, and design for Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging Launch projects
  • Responsible for project support on new fulfillment technology programs
  • Lead both preconstruction and construction scope reviews and development with internal technical customers, and facilitate engineering and design efforts on new and retrofit projects
  • Prepare reports, specifications, technical analysis to fully define the design requirements, equipment and services required on capacity expansion and remodel projects
  • Oversee and facilitate execution of building construction, TI, and engineering deployment for both new and existing facilities
  • Provide technical direction concerning engineering design / AutoCAD, building design, layouts, build details, schedules and materials in accordance to both Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging and North American Customer Fulfillment (NACF) design parameters
  • Lead due diligence, survey facilities, electrical and air studies. Develop and document procedures to audit the facility, provide evaluations and analysis. Recommend solutions to facility infrastructure, such as safety, security and egress/life safety
  • Negotiate contracts with Architects, General Contractors, Sub-contractors and other trades. Present formal documentation for approval when required
  • Ensure that contracts are fit for purpose, cost effective and incorporate appropriate Service Level Agreements. Work with our Contracts Team to fully execute all necessary contracts.
  • Provide overall site management, coordination, planning, specification of business proposals and coordination of subcontractors
  • Facilitate and team with internal stakeholders regarding engineering buildouts, IT readiness, and turnover to operational groups
  • Partner with teams tasked with transition of base building management and oversight of all turnover documentation
  • Coach and guide all project teams (architects, consulting engineers, general contractors, sub-contractors, internal stakeholders) throughout the full project lifecycle
  • Ensure that contracted resources deliver work to meet duration and quality targets, addressing and ensuring the correction of under-performance issues
  • Audit contractors to check that the skills and competences of contract labor are appropriate to need and they are fit to undertake the work on which they will be deployed
  • Inform contractors of projected changes in resource or work demand so that they can take appropriate action
  • Establish and operate the information systems necessary for effective scheduling and recording of contract work
  • Support contractors’ work and help them to achieve higher performance level
  • Oversee multiple projects in various locations simultaneously
  • Review of designs for conformance to current Mechatronics, Packaging, NACF, and other applicable building code specifications
  • Provide critical review of current design standards to identify value engineering and design enhancement opportunities to be considered by internal engineering and schematic design partners
  • Comprehensive budget tracking, forecasting, and management of assigned expansion, remodel, and new build projects
  • Receipt, review, and analysis of all proposed cost and time change requests as presented by external project teams
  • Review and guide internally requested changes for validity, impact, and ensure timely and cost sensitive incorporation once approved
  • Lead and/or assist in negotiations with appropriate AHJ entities as required with the architect, internal support teams and our fire consultant engineers
  • Positive, clear, concise, and transparent cross team communication for all aspects of project delivery
  • Establish and maintain a safe work environment following all local, State and Amazon specific standards and requirements.
  • Lead and manage the construction of complex cross-functional projects with considerable impact. Projects may span organizations or geographies in support of a business objective.
  • Define projects (scope, delivery, budget), set objectives, analyze data, drive improvements to metrics, and influence resource allocation.
  • Responsible to deep dive technical solutions that encompass advanced construction applications, material handling integration, and vendor commissioning content and expectations.
  • Lead and coordinate execution efforts between internal teams and outside vendors including equipment specifications, material flow, process design, and site layout.
  • Lead and actively participate in design reviews and communicate future impacts of proposed solutions on an individual system or its components, on the overall systems architecture, and on facility processes.
  • Communicate project status, effectively answer project questions in detail, and regularly produce clear and concise summaries for the projects you own to your leadership/management team.
  • Capture and synthesize the Voice of Customer (VoC) for all new product introductions and leverage this information to prioritize system defects and lead the triage efforts with product Development teams applying lessons learned with the Program, TPM, and WHS teams to enable acceleration and deployment scale.
  • Develop and manage budget and contract documents including RFPs, change order controls, purchase orders, and invoicing.
  • Build strong working relationships within our Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging Team along with other internal cross functional teams. Working with Base Building Management (BBM), Reliability Maintenance & Engineering (RME), Robotics, Finance, Safety, and other business stakeholders.
  • Identify and lead process improvement initiatives in support of Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging teams within a geographic node.
  • Develop cross-functional knowledge of Construction, Operations, and Engineering team systems, processes, procedures, and tools.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to generate high-quality, cost-effective ROM solutions in very short periods of time.
  • Travel up to 75% throughout North America and as necessary to Europe.

The base pay for this position ranges from $95,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $177,900/year in our highest geographic market.
