Job Description:

Overview:

SRI Education, at SRI International, conducts a variety of complex, large-scale, and equitable research, evaluation, and technical assistance projects involving children, families, programs, teachers, and schools. SRI is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented technical writer/editor to support proposal writing and editing, as well as other communications. The technical writer/editor will plan, create, and ensure the quality of various written materials, with a significant focus on proposals that support winning new work.

Responsibilities:

The technical writer/editor will work with SRI Education proposal and project teams to ensure that proposals and products use inclusive language and are well written, well organized, and professionally formatted. They will meet with teams to understand proposal and project requirements, review and edit documents, and provide feedback in writing and verbally. The technical writer/editor will also assist project teams with messaging, organization, look and feel, and usability of products for target audiences in earlier phases of product development as well as at the final review phases. In addition, the technical writer/editor will write content for proposals, reports, briefs, brochures, blog posts, websites, and social media. In short, the technical writer/editor will partner with researchers and technical assistance specialists on the development and editing of proposals and products to make them more compelling and easier to read.


Responsibilities include:

  • Help proposal teams develop and communicate a compelling story, including recommending “win” themes and other customer-focused strategies based on knowledge about the proposed solution and customer needs.
  • Develop proposal outlines based on requests for proposals (RFPs) with headings and placeholders for required information, and relevant proposal information from internal and external sources.
  • Ensure proposals and other dissemination products use inclusive language and are well written, well organized, polished, professional, error-free, and professionally formatted.
  • Assist with writing, revising, proofreading, and editing proposal drafts, including executive summaries, management plans, personnel qualifications, and organization credentials.
  • Maintain high-quality results by using proposal templates and following proposal-writing standards including readability, consistency, and tone.
  • Help maintain proposal library and databases, including past performance descriptions and other reusable proposal content.
  • Grow professionally and develop new skills through ongoing project embedded mentorship and professional development opportunities.
  • Contribute to the integration of an equity lens into our work from development to dissemination.

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field with a writing related focus
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience writing professionally (copywriter, technical writer, etc.), including editing.
  • Equivalent combination of the above education, training, and experience.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging both in research and in the workplace.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency in grammar, spelling, and punctuation; strong proofreading skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills to meet tight deadlines, including attention to detail and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and consultative style in expressing opinions in a collaborative work environment.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word and PowerPoint) as well as basic proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (ability to edit PDFs).
  • Demonstrated ability to follow clients’ publication style and editorial guidelines, including APA style.

Candidates with following qualifications preferred:

  • Experience writing proposals for federal agencies like the U.S. Department of Education and National Science Foundation.

The salary range is: $62,000 - $85,000. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles. Positions may also qualify for SRI's Pay for Outstanding Performance program or the annual Performance Based Compensation program.
