Job Description:

 

The Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is seeking a Museum Education Manager to join the highly collaborative Education team. This individual, under the supervision of the Director of Education, will create and implement educational content and programs utilizing the Folger’s permanent and temporary exhibitions, collection, and arts and humanities programming to educate and engage audiences of all ages. The Museum Education Manager will collaborate often with other internal departments to plan, coordinate, and execute onsite experiences. This role will be a new addition to the team and integral in both the preparation of the Folger’s reopening to the public and evaluation of visitor engagement with educational content.

 

This person will play a critical role in the planning and execution of onsite educational experiences, such as exhibition tours. The successful candidate will ground their work in the Folger’s institutional goals, commitment to DEIA , current museum education best practices, and visitor experience evaluation, striving to make the Folger Shakespeare Library and its resources a gathering place for diverse individuals to connect in their own way.

 

The standard schedule for this role is Monday-Friday, 8:45am-4:45pm, which is a 35-hour workweek with an hour unpaid lunch daily. Additional evening and weekend hours may be required for special programs. Candidates should be prepared initially for overtime hours in preparation for the Folger’s reopening to the public. This position is currently hybrid with ~2 days on-site per week but will expand to more days on-site once the Folger reopens to the public in June. The selected candidate will need to be within a commutable distance to the D.C. office (DC, MD, VA) by their start date.

 

Compensation:

 

  • This is a weekly-paid hourly position at a rate of $30.71-34.62 per hour and a 35-hour work week.

Duties:

 

  • In collaboration with Education, Collections, and Visitor Experience expertise, designs content and methodology of general visitor tours, exhibition spotlights and other gallery experiences.
  • Liaises with Collections and Engagement to ensure education content for visitors that is related to the exhibitions and artifacts remains up to date after exhibitions and artifacts updates.
  • Works with Visitor Experience to ensure all programs align with logistics and scheduling created by Visitor Experience
  • Manages the training and continued coaching in active partnership with Education colleagues and collaborators across the Folger, (Collections/Exhibitions, the Folger Institute, Visitor Experience, and Programming & Performance) to ensure staff and volunteers are ready and able to execute dynamic tours, lead gallery experiences, and other programming for school groups (including K-12, undergraduate, and graduate) family programs, and other visitor programming.
  • Stays up to date in two key discipline areas: 1) scholarship and discoveries relevant to the Folger and our exhibitions and 2) inquiry-based gallery and museum program methodologies. The former will be done in collaboration with the Institute and Collections/Exhibitions.
  • Communicates updated discipline knowledge described above with staff and volunteers to ensure the Folger is serving our visitors by adhering to the highest and most current standards. Works closely with VE team to ensure training is regularly updated and offered.
  • Leads tours, spotlight programs, and gallery experiences throughout the week for daily visitors and various groups, school groups to keep experience and assessment fresh.
  • Works with the Education team to create new experiences for visiting students and oversees the execution of established programs such as the student festivals and Lily McKee High School Fellowship program.
  • In collaboration with colleagues across the Folger, plans and executes programs for kids and families that engages them with the exhibitions and promotes curiosity and inquiry such as our family programs.
  • Works closely with the Exhibition and Visitor Experience team in development and execution of our visitor experience evaluation processes.
  • Serves on working groups focused on pan-institutional projects. Represents both the institution-wide view and departmental priorities in these groups and reports back to department on progress.

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, History, Museum Studies or other relevant discipline, Master’s degree desirable.
  • Prior experience planning, coordinating, and executing educational experiences in a museum environment for a wide range of visitors.
  • Prior experience in museums, non-profits or cultural institutions.
  • Experience engaging with museum visitors, leading programs, and giving visitor tours.
  • Experience leading and coaching staff and volunteers.
  • Experience working in multilingual communities most commonly found in DC (Spanish, Amharic, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, and/or ASL) or bilingual knowledge is highly desired.

 

 

Skills and Knowledge:

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of museum teaching and educational content development
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and high volume of work with close attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Some knowledge of Shakespeare preferred.
  • An eager and enthusiastic learner
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to work with intergeneration families, kids of all ages, including kids on the spectrum.
  • Ability to present to groups in a clear, compelling manner.
