Job Description:

Are you ready to join Connecticut Innovation’s vibrant community of innovators? Connecticut Innovations (“CI”) is Connecticut’s strategic venture capital arm, and we are passionate about serving our portfolio of 220+ companies across various industries, with strengths in life sciences, technology, and climate tech.

Come join one of our quickly growing portfolio companies, Driver!

Driver Technologies Overview

Driver Technologies is an AI-based mobility tech company that delivers the products and services needed to keep everyone protected on the road. Our mobile app, Driver, transforms a driver's phone into a dash cam designed to improve road safety and make mobility technology more accessible. Driver allows users to video record their trip while receiving safety alerts such as forward collision, driver drowsiness and distraction warnings while also offering cloud-based video storage, roadside assistance services, coaching, and scoring capabilities. Users have full control over their data stored on the Driver Cloud and can choose what to share with interested parties such as employers, insurers and family members.

  1. Driver is a mission-driven company dedicated to making life-saving driving technology available to everyone.
  2. We're excited to see advancements in automotive technology make our commutes safer, but we don't believe these benefits should be awarded only to those who can afford a Tesla or high end luxury vehicle.
  3. At Driver, we're leveraging the power of computer vision and big data analysis to make driver education and assistance features available on common mobile devices.
  4. We also work with some of the largest companies in the industry to make both traditional and self-driving cars safer. These challenging tasks are the beating heart of Driver's product culture.

Our Engineering Culture

And when we say big data we mean it. Every month, we collect over 10 million miles of drive data (that's over 40 trips to the moon), 2 billion drive images, and hundreds of billions of telematics events. We're working at a scale that provides unique insights into real world driving behavior in every country and city in the world. We take serious responsibility for this data, and care deeply about the privacy of our users. It's our goal to set the tone for the entire industry when it comes to enabling drivers to manage their connected car data, putting data control directly into the hands of our users.

  1. We have mobile apps for Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift). Our Backend is written in Elixir and our Cloud Frontend in React. Our machine learning and computer vision pipelines are written in Python with some C++ sprinkled in as needed.
  2. We are passionate about our products and saving lives through road safety.
  3. We believe that software should be available to everyone, not just folks with the latest hot devices. Driver is an international and equality focused product, which means coding for the lowest common denominator of technology available in the developing world.
  4. We enjoy wearing many hats. One day you may be working on telematics data processing and the next an exciting user-facing feature.
  5. We are automated-testing-oriented, but take a pragmatic approach to make sure our tests provide a meaningful impact. In other words, high code coverage is great, but increasing a number is not the only goal. Expect to spend time testing your code on the road.
  6. We are diverse, smart, and focused, but don’t take ourselves too seriously.
  7. We have employees from across the world working at Driver and are committed to growing as a fully remote team!

Mobile Engineer

Report to the Chief Technology Officer and be part of a collaborative Engineering Team supporting the company's top-rated AI-powered dash cam and safety alert app and developing it into insurance-backed programs for commercial and personal drivers. There will be direct integrations with insurance, automotive and municipal partners working to enhance road safety.

  1. You have 5+ years of experience building beautifully factored, high performance iOS and/or Android apps.
  2. You care deeply about the user experience and making beautiful user interfaces.
  3. You engage in code reviews and perform testing to ensure delivery of high quality software.
  4. You’re well-versed in Kotlin or Swift.
  5. You’re excited about using low level motion APIs (accelerometer, gyroscope, etc.) to develop behavioral models for safe driving behavior.
  6. You don’t believe in simply accepting performance tradeoffs on resource-limited devices – optimizing CPU, network use, and battery life gets you excited.
  7. You’ve tinkered with computer vision on the edge using CoreML or Tensorflow Lite.
  8. Experience with CI/CD systems, device farm testing, and backend development is a plus.

Qualities

  1. You’re an independent thinker and self-directed, but also enjoy engaging with a highly-cohesive team.
  2. You leave things better than you found them and subscribe to the ‘broken window’ theory.
  3. You appreciate clean, readable code, and that simplicity is elegance. Code is your art and craftsmanship, and you take pride in honing your skills.
  4. You believe that in order to move fast, you need to move well; there is not a tradeoff between speed and quality.
  5. You geek out on functional programming but are also a polyglot and pragmatic about working in other languages.
  6. You see a codebase as a treasure map and are excited to see where the clues lead.
  7. You have a hacker mentality and enjoy reverse engineering systems.
  8. You want more out of life than building yet another content management system.
  9. You see context switching between apps and languages as a stimulating perk and would be bored working in the same corner of a codebase all day.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

We have strict wage minimums, generous benefits, and personal leave policies. Our goal is to provide safe, rewarding, and empowering work environments for all who interact with our company and/or portfolio companies.
