Under supervision in a hematology/oncology research lab, assist with performing research studies and troubleshooting new and established assay techniques. Assist with performing and analyzing in vivo and in vitro experiments to study expression of specific proteins in ovarian, breast, and lung cancer and to define the role of specific proteins in promoting tumor growth, metastasis, and tumor initiation using primary cancer cells and cell lines. Assist with conducting in vivo experiments with patient-derived xenograft mouse models to assess treatment effects with novel agents. Assist with processing and banking primary human and mouse tumor samples. Other duties assigned as needed.
Theoretical knowledge of immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, and protein chemistry.
Ability to perform standard molecular biology techniques, including PCR, SDS Page electrophoresis, western blotting, ELISA assays, and recombinant DNA manipulation.
Ability to culture primary tumor cells. Knowledge of various mice handling techniques. Ability to assist with performing tumor isolation from mice, tumor freezing and formalin-fixing procedures.
Knowledge and willingness to handle blood, plasma and other human specimens for processing and shipping. Must be willing and able to work with human samples, animals, biohazardous materials and radioactivity.
Excellent organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and order supplies. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to follow UCSD Safety and Hazardous Materials guidelines. Ability and willingness to work with hazardous/biohazardous materials.
Knowledge of various cell based assays pertaining to investigating cancer stem cell hypothesis.
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. Demonstrated skill to effectively and clearly communicate with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility to faculty, academicians, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals. Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
Knowledge of the cancer stem cell hypothesis and markers, particularly as it pertains to ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer.
Ability to establish patient-derived xenograft (PDX) including subcutaneous injection model and orthotopic mice model.
Experience working with solid tumors, including breast and ovarian cancer.
Experience in mice orbital bleeding for various studies relating to anti-cancer drugs.
Knowledge and experience in flow cytometry and operation of a FACS Celesta instrument. Ability to assist with performing and interpreting results from experiments with human and mouse cells stained with specific fluorochrome-conjugated monoclonal antibodies.

Pay Transparency ActFull Salary Range: $51,949 - $61,972 Annually
The University of California, San Diego is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Expected Pay Scale. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity, relevant qualifications, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
