Job Description:

We Are:

Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, CERN in Europe and the South Pole.

We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.

The Microelectronics Division at Fermilab seeks a highly motivated Test Engineer to join the Testing and Tools Support group and contribute to Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) verification. The division has one test group and three design groups on Analog and Quantum Cryoelectronic, Ultrafast timing and Cross-cutting initiatives and High-speed and Advanced Digital. The ASIC Design activities involves developing readout and control electronics in deep sub-micron technologies. Current projects include high-speed data converters, time to digital converters, low noise amplifiers, ROICs for pixel detectors, ROICs for cryogenic detectors, on-chip data processing and on-chip machine learning.

Under general supervision based on your expertise, general experience, and academic study, you will build a setup for testing the ASICs, run the tests, and collect and analyze data. Multiple ASICs are produced per year. This work will involve working with the ASIC designers on printed circuit board design, setup and programming of test equipment, data taking and analysis. Testing can include cryogenic and radiation environments. The ASIC department also tests production quantities of ASICs for particle physics. For this purpose, and ASIC testing robot has been built. You may be asked to assist groups using the robot with setup and operation.

You will:

  • Design or assist in the design of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for testing the ASICs.
  • Develop a test strategy with the ASIC designer(s) and implement the tests with the appropriate test equipment and control software.
  • Collect test data and analyze or plot if required.
  • Support users of the ASIC testing robot.

We are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of applicable experience.
  • Shown understanding of basic electrical circuit components and theory.
  • Ability to use basic electronic test equipment (multi-meters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators), read and understand circuit schematics.
  • Perseverance and savvy to logically approach and trouble-shoot problems and learn from them.
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills which are essential for safe performance of duties.
  • Digital literacy including the use of Windows, Linux, MacOS, standard web browsers, and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience in CAD (Altium) and/or electrical circuit simulation software, a plus.
  • Programming experience in Python, a plus.
  • Experience in NI LabVIEW and NI PXIe crates, a plus.
  • Robotic experience, a plus.
