Director of Development

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position availability: immediately

 

ABOUT ARISE AFRICA:

Arise Africa is a Christian ministry that works with orphaned and vulnerable children of Zambia. Arise exists to equip, educate, and empower. The ministry operates schools and homes where over 600 children receive medical care, education, and discipleship through their programs. The ministry has an annual budget of $2M.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

To lead, plan and implement all strategies associated with charitable revenue generation, included but not limited to annual appeals, special project initiatives, major gift fundraising efforts, galas, foundation and corporation grant writing, and special events planning and execution.

 

PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS:

Staff within Arise Africa, community leaders, donors, and volunteers, including members of all Boards and Advisory Councils.

 

WORKPLACE:

Arise Africa works in office 4 days a week and from home one day.

 

INTERNAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Strategic planning: The Director of Development creates both a long-term plan, as well as yearly goals, to include effective operational management, fundraising strategies, dollars to be raised, and volunteer engagement. The Director of Development is accountable to the Executive Director for the successful execution of the plan.

B. Budget management: In conjunction with the Executive Director, the Director of Development oversees the budget for conducting the fundraising activities of the ministry.

C. Teamwork: Because Arise has a small staff, the Director of Development works with colleagues to execute the overall programs and projects of the Foundation.

D. Marketing/branding: The Director of Development is responsible for adhering to brand standards when writing copy for the website and any other form of communication to external constituencies.

E. Record-keeping: The accurate management of the database, donor records and research, and gift receipting is the responsibility of the Director of Development and support staff as directed.

F. Donor communication: The Director of Development creates all appeals for direct mail, social media posts, event invitations/programs/scripts, grants for corporate and foundation potential donors, and stewardship communication and donor reporting.

 

EXTERNAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Donor cultivation: The Director of Development, in collaboration with the Executive Director, will create a plan for donor cultivation, including identifying opportunities for in-person meetings and engagement, with appropriate follow-up and portfolio management responsibilities.

B. Donor solicitation: Managing the soliciting of donors – whether by staff or volunteers – is the responsibility of the Director of Development.

C. Event management: All special events for the ministry will be managed by the entire staff team, with detailed planning and direction by the Director of Development.

D. Community engagement: The Director of Development will connect with and build relationships with the larger community, both to enhance the visibility of the ministry and to identify prospective donors.

 

Salary Starts at $75,000 with an annual bonus.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

· Bachelor’s degree preferably in business, nonprofit management or related field

· 3 years or more of nonprofit development experience in a leadership role

· Direct experience with gift solicitation in a one-on-one setting

· Proven track record of closing gifts

· Proficiency with donor database systems and reporting

· Demonstrated ability to motivate and manage volunteers

· Special event experience

· Some staff supervisory experience preferred
