About The Department

The Event Development and Production Department develops and produces NYRR events from concept all the way through execution in alignment with NYRR’s mission. The TCS New York City Marathon, United Airlines NYC Half and the RBC Brooklyn Half are just a few of the 40+ adult events and 30+ Rising New York Road Runners youth events produced by the team each year. The team leads core elements of the operations including physical site management, timing and scoring operations, volunteer management, hospitality and special events, safety and security, management of our warehouse and all race collateral, city and state agency relationship management, and permitting.

About The Internship

The New York Road Runners Internship Program is a paid, 21-week experience spanning from Monday, June 17, 2024 to Friday, November 15, 2024, in which interns will learn from the best in the non-profit business.

Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.

Under the supervision of the Youth Event Lead, the Youth Events Intern will support the development and execution of small-scale events, each serving 100-500 or more participants, community events through the Youth Events Mobile and the overall improvement of the Cross Country Series. This position will report to the Director of Youth Events, with the core responsibility of supporting NYRR youth event properties, including those associated with the TCS New York City Marathon.

Intern Responsibilities (primary And Secondary Duties)
 

  • Under the supervision of the Youth Events Lead, support the development, logistics and day-of operations of small-scale youth events and special initiatives.
  • Support the event lead in the development of the Kids’ Kickoff event as part of the TCS NYC Marathon.
  • Coordinate with HR for all interns’ participation in the New Balance Bronx 10M.
  • Work with the Youth Events coordinator to support the development of the TCS Run With Champions, a school day event during marathon week.
  • Work on a specific Youth Events Project to enhance the development of events and participant’s experience.
  • Develop an understanding of the Long-Term Athlete Development program to ensure RNYRR philosophy is a part of all youth events.
  • Maintain open, consistent with NYRR’s core values, lines of communication with all appropriate, NYRR, partners and sponsors, staff and volunteers.
     

Internship Schedule

Interns are expected to work 25 hours weekly, Monday to Friday, in a hybrid work setting. This role will also have weekend work (Saturdays or Sundays) to support NYRR events. Dates will be determined at the start of the internship and availability will be taken into account.

Internship Requirements
 

  • Sophomore or junior in college, working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in Sports Management, Sports Coaching, or related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Teams)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Some knowledge of track and field and road racing
  • Knowledge of NYC Public Schools system is a plus
  • Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds
  • The ability to be on your feet, outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts
     

Salary: $22/hour
