Job Description:

The Web Publisher is responsible for developing and publishing content to Burning Man Project’s web properties - in particular the Burningman.org website and the Burning Man Journal. This role will create content, track analytics and implement strategies to ensure the Burning Man homepage, website subpages, blog, and other web platforms/subdomains represent the nonprofit’s priorities across its general public, curious and core audiences. The Web Publisher maintains the sites’ editorial calendar and coordinates editing and publishing operations across multiple departments, and serves as the Communications team’s principal liaison to the Technology team

This is a regular, full-time role, located in either San Francisco, CA or Reno, NV.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT

Web Content Development (55%)

  1. Proactively manage and update the Burning Man Project website, aligning the messaging, imagery/video, links, captions, and page designs with the shared narrative, editorial calendar and overall communications strategy.
  2. Edit existing pages and design new ones in Wordpress Gutenberg environment to deliver compelling user experiences for site audiences.
  3. Uphold Burning Man Project brand and editorial style guidelines and shared narrative across all web-based properties. Maintain and update web publishing guidelines.
  4. Curate, manipulate, and edit photo and video content as needed to support web publishing . Maintain Vimeo collection of selected videos to be embedded in web properties.
  5. Review, edit, and publish all stories on the Burning Man Journal blog, ensuring editorial standards, high quality image use, story layout, and appropriate metadata/tagging.
  6. Manage development and publication of AfterBurn and other public facing reports and documents generated by the Communications team.
  7. Manage development of the annual online Survival Guide, including content migration, website reskinning, incorporation of design assets, and proofing.
  8. Liaison between Communications team and survey task force team to build and test surveys.
  9. Write, edit, organize, proofread, and publish additional materials for Burning Man Project’s various web properties as needed.
  10. Support all Communications volunteer teams (including Census and Webcast) with their web publishing requirements.



Editorial Management & Distributed Publishing Oversight (25%)

  1. Manage and maintain organization-wide editorial publishing calendar, in collaboration with Communications team leadership and departmental stakeholders.
  2. Lead interdepartmental editorial and publishing processes. Develop process standards and SOPs, provide training and counsel to other Burning Man Project departments assigned to edit pages and sections. Manage review and approval processes, publish approved pages.
  3. Track organization-wide progress against calendared content goals and manage accordingly.



Web Strategy and Architecture (15%)

  1. Take a leadership role in the iterative development of Burning Man web properties, serving as a primary liaison between the Communications and Technology teams. Develop and maintain a multi-year roadmap for site development.
  2. Manage development, review and approval of new or changed information architecture.
  3. Create and maintain website analytics report, tracking engagement and site trends, to feed into Communications Dashboard and be used to optimize UX and objectives by audience.



Black Rock City (5%)

  1. Maintain website and Journal presence during Black Rock City event, to align with organizational objectives.
  2. Work closely with the Associate Director and Documentation Team to identify content requirements for web publishing. Collaborate in on-playa content creation.
  3. Other Media Mecca related responsibilities as required


LEARNING AND TEACHING

  1. Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  2. Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  3. Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  4. Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.


QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  1. 5+ years of demonstrated experience as a web product manager or content manager.
  2. Substantial experience with WordPress Gutenberg publishing environment.
  3. Demonstrated cross-departmental or inter-team collaboration skills in content development and management.
  4. Substantial experience with planning, execution, and delivery of tasks in a structured project management environment.
  5. 2-3 years experience in photo and video editing for web delivery.
  6. Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada.



PREFERRED

  1. It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to a Burning Man event and/or is familiar with the culture.

COMPENSATION:

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated salary range for this position is $96,000-$107,000 in San Francisco, CA or $65,000 to $73,000 annually in Reno, NV.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT



  1. Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature; no special demands are required.
  2. On-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore, this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and exposed to fumes or airborne particles, as well as possible extremes in temperature.
