This position is part of a four person team in support of Drought.gov, a part of the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), located at National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). Drought.gov is the public face of NIDIS and serves as a clearinghouse for drought products, forecasts, services, and information at the state, regional, national, and global levels. The team is split with two front-end development positions and two back-end GIS / Python / development positions. The position can be onsite at any of the four NCEI locations, fully remote, or a combination of the two. Reimbursable travel is available for in person attendance at the annual planning meeting in either Asheville NC or Boulder CO.

Required Skills

1. JavaScript (both Vanilla JavaScript and jQuery)
2. PHP (preferably 8+)
3. Use of Git, npm, and other build tools.
4. Understanding of CSS, experience with preprocessors such as SASS / LESS preferred
5. Designing, Building and Maintaining APIs
6. Ability to work independently and cross-functionally
7. Keen attention to detail
8. Excellent interpersonal skills
9. Must be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility

Preferred Skills

1. Drupal 10/11 (both Site Builder and Developer experience)
2. Familiarity with OpenLayers or Leaflet
3. Familiarity with D3 or other Data Visualization toolsets
4. Experience with MySQL / MariaDB
5. Experience with Docker and Podman tools
6. Experience with Unix / Linux command-line and bash shell
7. Experience with User Experience Testing
8. Website Accessibility Compliance
9. Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS) platforms
10. A background using environmental / climate variables in research is desired
