RELOCATION:
 

• An ideal candidate should be very flexible regarding location. Work/Training assignment could place a Management Trainee anywhere on BNSF's operating system (see System Map).
• Transportation Management Trainees are placed in a training location for their first six months of employment. Following completion of the training program, MTs are placed in an open position across the BNSF network. Please note that the placement location may differ from the training location, depending on business needs.
• Relocation assistance may be provided to those who are moving more than 50 driving miles from their current residence. This applies to both the training location and placement location, if the placement location differs from the training location
• Please reference the “Work Location” information above for a sample of some of the available training locations. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of training locations.

TRAINING:
 

• Training for Transportation Management Trainees is a six-month program. This opportunity begins with a one-week comprehensive orientation at BNSF Corporate Headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. Following orientation, the trainee will complete several additional weeks at the BNSF Technical Training Center (TTC) in Overland Park, Kansas, their training location, and at the Network Operations Center (NOC) in Fort Worth.
• Overall, the trainee will learn to manage railroad terminal operations, work on specific logistics projects, manage a train crew (which consists of a conductor and engineer), and prepare for a field operations supervisory position.
   

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 

• Participation in classroom and field training.
• Facilitate multiple safety briefings throughout the shift with crews, dispatchers, maintenance employees and other BNSF Team Members.
• Lead crew discussions on how to approach others about safety, relay information about safely servicing customer plants and facilities, ways to minimize risk, and create a culture of safety compliance.
• Hold employees accountable for compliance with rules and regulations established by the Federal Railroad Administration and BNSF Railway.
• Ensure compliance with attendance policies and rules violations.
• Ride trains with the crews and direct operational testing & audits for the crews.
• Assist crews with personnel paperwork, vacation requests, and provide transportation for crews to board and operate the trains timely.
• Correspond with customers by providing accurate and timely information regarding their shipments to and from customer facility/plants daily.
• Plan the movement of cars, inventory, locomotive, crews, and trains within a designated terminal and across an operational division/territory.
• Optimize crew utilization, the use of locomotives, and rail teams who work on track infrastructure to plan/execute track maintenance and repairs.

At the conclusion of the 6-month training program, MTs will be promoted to the role of Terminal Trainmaster

Duties/Responsibilities for a Terminal Trainmaster:
 

• Assist in implementing policy and the execution of the operating plan.
• Supervise Transportation (TY&E) employees and plan daily train and switching operations consistent with safety and efficiency.
• Conduct operations tests and safety meetings. investigate accidents and injuries.
• Monitor and control costs to meet goals.
• Ensure compliance with BNSF's equal employment policies, safety and operating rules, schedule agreements, and government regulations.
   

WORKING CONDITIONS:
 

• Work in shifts (can be 12+ hours) in a field-based environment
• Work in a 24 by 7 operations environment including nights, weekends, evenings and holidays, on-call or available for emergency situations
• Work both indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
• Work around heavy and moving machinery
• The environment requires personal protective equipment, hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves. These materials will be provided by BNSF
   

SUPERVISION:
 

• Supervise train operations in a designated territory
• Ensure compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, and policies
• Supervise train, yard and engine employees in a union environment
• Perform multiple safety briefings throughout the shift
   

LEADERSHIP:
 

• Lead crew discussions about Safety, relay information about safely servicing customer plants and facilities and ways to minimize risk.
• Plan the movement of cars, inventory, locomotive, crews, and trains within a designated terminal and across an Operational division/territory.
• Coordinate the arrival and departure of trains at an operational yard or terminal.
• Assign and coordinate daily schedules for personnel
• Provide customers with safe, efficient, and economical service
• Execute divisional plans, monitor and manage costs
• Conduct operational tests, implement safety programs
   

COMMUNICATION:
 

• Interface and coordinate with other operating departments, including engineering and mechanical, and work groups to include dispatchers and yardmasters, to execute the operations plan
• Interact with customers by providing accurate and timely information regarding their shipments to and from customer facilities/plants daily

HOURS OF WORK:
 

• Hours are irregular with a minimum of 40 hours per week and include 12-hour shift requirements.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT:
 

• Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
   

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
 

• Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green, yellow and lunar (clear light) colors and able to see at night.
• Able to hear and, with training, distinguish auditory signals.
• Ability to work in a 24/7 environment.
• Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
• Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
• Able to work in a shop, terminal, or field environment, climb on ladders and walk on uneven surfaces safely.
• Able to travel up to 25% of the time based on business need.
• Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire and to relocate within upon career progression and/or as business needs
• Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree from an accredited university to be completed prior to hire OR I have obtained a degree within the past four (4) years.
• Have or anticipate to have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA with a degree in Engineering OR a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-Engineering degree.
• Have four (4) years or less of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held pursuing a degree in high school and/or college.
   

Our Management Trainee program is geared towards recent college graduates with four years or less of experience in a professional work environment, excluding internships or positions held while in high school or college.
