Job Description:

The City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division is looking to hire a Traffic Signal Priority Engineer! This is intermediate-level, professional traffic engineering work involving responsibility for conducting a wide range of traffic studies, monitoring and optimization, data collection activities and designing projects or components of projects. This position will specifically perform engineering work in the field of traffic control signals for Signal Priority with an emphasis on Transit Signal Priority (TSP) within the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system (estimated 110 TSP signalized intersections post BRT construction out of a total of nearly 400 signalized intersections owned, operated, or maintained by the City of Madison) and potential expansion into other priority systems as well as streetlighting design and other public works projects. Work on assigned projects requires the exercise of independent technical and professional judgment and is performed under the supervision of a higher-level professional engineer. This position will serve as the primary contact for the public and other agencies for questions relating to Signal Priority timings and public works projects. The work is characterized by the application of theoretical professional engineering expertise and the attainment of procedural knowledge through on-the-job training and experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of professional traffic engineering experience in the design and construction of public works projects.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in traffic, civil, transportation engineering, or a closely related field.

Two (2) years of experience applying the following:

  • Traffic engineering principles and practices.
  • Civil and electrical engineering construction and design practices as they apply to the design, construction and operation of transportation and traffic control facilities.
  • Operation of traffic signal controllers and traffic signal networks.
  • Computer software applicable to the duties of the position, including computer assisted design processes and techniques.
