Position Summary & Responsibilities

 

As a successful Tool Design Engineer, you will be responsible to design cost – effective tools and fixtures for our manufacturing team. You provide oversight to the Tooling Department with respect to the planning, development, deployment, and execution of new tools. You will be a part of a Manufacturing Engineering Group, to support and develop a mature production program in the fabrication shop.

Core Competencies: Manufacturing Methods - Knowledge of manufacturing, methods, fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment, machines/machine tools, cutting tools and fluids, N/C programming, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems).

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

  • Design jigs and fixtures with PRO-E CAD system or similar systems while utilizing the Engineering CAD model according to a prescribed timetable
  • CAD design/drawing experience with CAD, CATIA V5, Solidworks, and / or Creo.
  • Use standard design practices that are capable of high repeatability and wear resistant at the same time cost effective
  • Work closely with plant personnel, manufacturing, design and industrial engineers, process technicians and programmers to ensure manufacturability, validate process/technology on new fixtures and jigs.
  • Establish tooling and fixture concepts. Review and approve tool and fixture design drawings. Estimates hours required to design and also fabricate tools and fixtures.
  • Provide concurrent tooling support to manufacturing for existing fixtures.
  • Coordinate with Toolmakers to ensure jigs and fixtures are manufactured correctly and on time
  • Provide technical oversight of tooling suppliers
  • Will coordinate directly with fixture suppliers to ensure all aspects of the build process are understood and responsible for supplier meeting quality, reliability, cost, and schedule.
  • Initiate cost reduction projects for both material and labor related to tooling and fixture department.
  • Performing tolerance analysis to ensure form/fit/function. Conduct root cause failure investigations and implement associated corrective actions related to the new or exciting tolls and fixtures.
  • Ensures processes and procedures are following regulations of federal, state as well as local regulations
  • Update fixture drawings, revision levels, and documentation when making modifications to fixtures.
  • Makes recommendations for changes in part drawings to improve manufacturing and/or performance.
  • Excellent ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.

 

Position Requirements

 

  • 5-10 years’ experience in tool design work is required
  • CAD skills in PRO-E are desired but experience in other similar CAD systems is acceptable
  • Associates Degree in an engineering related field – Preferably Mechanical Engineering degree
  • Strong knowledge of the manufacturing process as it relates to developing statements of work for complex tooling used in a production envelopment.
  • Ability to communicate with various levels of leadership - Must be able to coordinate and resolve technical problems.
  • Ability to work well with little to no supervision
