Job Description:

Murmuration is a nonprofit organization that amplifies the power of civic engagement by providing data, digital tools, and research-driven insights to community-focused organizations so that together we can create an America where everyone can lead healthy, free, and dignified lives.

Every day, people are trying to shape our future for the better. Fighting for water that’s safe to drink. Schools that serve students equitably. Gun laws that make sense. And rallying people who care like we do. And yet too often, the skillful organizers working to mobilize communities lack access to technology that could supercharge their efforts. Knocking on every door instead of knowing which will open most easily. And going up against outside interests that have half the heart, but twice the tools.

In communities across America, Murmuration’s partners are leveraging our data, tools, and insights to help thousands of organizers orchestrate millions of individual people to do big things together. Demand big things together. To create the world they want. Together.

About the Position

Do you see yourself as a mentor, a technical steward, a partner in impact, and a builder?

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be one of our most senior individual contributors and the tech lead for one of our cross-functional pods, so you will play a key role in shaping our success! You’ll help us drive forward thinking engineering strategies and build the future of our Organizer app platform that empowers communities nationwide. You’ll combine your technical expertise with systems thinking, bringing your collaborative leadership mindset to problem solving, helping us build scalable, resilient systems that make a real impact on people’s lives.

Job Level: IC5

What You’ll Do

  1. Be a driver: Decide on key architecture changes and features that help us design, build, and maintain components that build user trust. Your systems thinking will help us make smart long-term decisions and mitigate risks
  2. Be a teacher: Share your technical expertise by helping us evolve our engineering best practices for code reviews, design, and development execution
  3. Be a mentor: Share your approach to fostering an engineering culture that helps us all grow as technical and inclusive leaders
  4. Be a collaborator: Work closely with our cross-functional teams such as Product, Design, and Data Engineering, to align technical work with product requirements that thoughtfully address user pain points and make our product more accessible for all (WCAG compliance)
  5. Be a technical steward: Lead release planning and operational readiness by helping the team build confidence in managing builds, deployments, and maintenance for mission-critical features. Your guidance will ensure reliability, stability, and shared ownership of our systems
  6. Be an advocate: Champion changes that matter such as continuous improvement, infrastructure upgrades that serve us at scale, performance optimizations, and technical debt reduction

If you love combining hands-on engineering with strategic impact and you’re excited to lead through code, mentorship, and collaboration, this is the place where you’ll thrive.

Requirements

  1. Proven experience building modern JavaScript/TypeScript solutions (Angular, React, or similar)
  2. Proven experience designing APIs and relational data models (GraphQL or equivalent)
  3. Proven experience leading feature delivery and managing releases in production systems
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to explain complex trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical partners
  5. Demonstrated mentorship and technical leadership in team settings
  6. Familiarity with accessible web standards (WCAG compliance)

Nice to Haves

  1. Formal degree optional; we welcome candidates from nontraditional or retraining paths
  2. Experience in civic-tech, nonprofit, or data-driven social-impact products
  3. Familiarity with design systems and tools (Figma or similar)
  4. Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployment
  5. Full-stack or open-source contributions
  6. Experience mentoring or shaping engineering ladders
