Job Description:

The Reader Institute for Community Journalism, Inc. (RICJ), a nonprofit organization that publishes the Chicago Reader, seeks an intern. If you are looking for an introduction to journalism and have a wide variety of interests, this internship is for you!

Interns report directly to a member of our leadership team and will work with RICJ staff. These are multifaceted positions with day-to-day adventures and assignments that may change. We desire someone flexible and interested in gaining knowledge by working for a nonprofit local media organization.

Students in degree-seeking programs and others who want an introduction to journalism are encouraged to apply.

Desired skills (not all required, but your experience will help):


  1. General: ability to work remotely and manage time effectively, researching, general administrative tasks, flexibility
  2. Editorial interns must have writing, interviewing, data gathering, data processing, research, and transcription skills. Editorial department interns are allowed to pitch stories and will be able to add to their writing portfolio; they will also assist staff writers and editors on ongoing projects and investigations


Requirements for all:


  1. Much of the work will be remote but candidates must be located in the Chicago area, as some in-person meetings and events will require your presence
  2. Must be able to attend scheduled meetings and check-ins necessary with the supervisor
  3. Must have access to a personal computer
  4. Must be familiar with Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom
  5. Must be able to communicate concerns effectively and be inquisitive
  6. Be kind and friendly
  7. Have a sense of humor
  8. Must have an interest in nonprofits and local journalism
  9. Must have a keen interest in Chicago!

Compensation:

The salary ranges from $19-$22 per hour, and no benefits are offered for this position.

Time requirements and dates for the next opening:

A 20-hour work week (Monday through Friday expected) will be required. January-May 2025.

Available programs:

  1. Spring - January through May – Dates to be determined.
