Who We Are

We are Design Citizen, a human-centered talent management firm working with organizations to create innovative, inclusive, and sustainable business solutions through design.

The Opportunity

Imagine a world where product teams no longer debate what might work. Instead, they test ideas directly with their users and let real behavior guide what gets built next.

Our client, a Y Combinator–backed startup that recently raised $22M in Series A funding, is building a platform that enables companies to safely test new ideas directly inside their products. Teams can experiment with new features, measure real outcomes, and refine their product experience based on evidence instead of guesswork.

The platform is powerful and deeply technical, used primarily by developers and data‑savvy product teams. The design challenge is translating dense, layered, highly configurable UI into tools that feel clear, learnable, and actionable. You’ll work in a fast‑moving, engineering‑driven environment where designers help define requirements, ask clarifying questions, and move quickly from ambiguity to shipped UX.

This role is ideal for designers who enjoy working in engineering-heavy, startup-paced environments and who thrive when solving complex UX problems with imperfect information.

What You’ll Be Doing

  1. Leading end-to-end design work across core product areas, from problem definition to polished execution.
  2. Designing complex, multi-layered product surfaces such as configuration panels, experiment setup flows, permissions, and data-rich dashboards.
  3. Working in a squad model alongside engineers and often a data scientist, helping teams align on requirements and move forward in a PM-light environment.
  4. Translating technical concepts, state logic, and system behavior into workflows that feel understandable and usable.
  5. Making fast, pragmatic UX decisions that balance ideal experience with engineering realities.
  6. Contributing to patterns and interaction models that support consistency across a complex, evolving UI.
  7. Evolving the design system and component library in Figma while collaborating with engineering on how components translate into shipped UI.
  8. Presenting work clearly and practically, focusing on reasoning, tradeoffs, and how decisions support user goals.

What We’re Looking For

  1. 6+ years of product design experience with a portfolio that demonstrates strength in complex, technical, or layered UI, not just consumer or mobile work.
  2. Experience designing for developer tools, data-heavy B2B platforms, admin systems, or other highly configurable products.
  3. Ability to work quickly in ambiguous, engineering-driven environments where requirements evolve through conversation.
  4. Comfort collaborating with engineers who move fast and expect clarity, not perfection.
  5. Evidence of 0→1 product ownership, not just refinement of existing features.
  6. Strong interaction design skills with the ability to break down complexity into clear, learnable workflows.
  7. Systems thinking that supports product delivery—patterns, consistency, and component logic—without being systems-only.
  8. High autonomy, strong communication, and good instincts about when to go deep versus when to ship and iterate.
  9. Experience working with state logic, permissions, configuration-heavy workflows, or multi-step technical flows is a strong plus.

Why You’ll Love This Role

  1. Real trust and autonomy. Remote-first, flexible schedule, and a culture where people are treated like adults.
  2. Speed without burnout. A fast-moving team that values quality without pushing hustle culture.
  3. A deeply technical product surface that rewards designers who enjoy untangling complexity and shaping clarity.
  4. A dev-centric culture where design is valued for helping teams move quickly and make better decisions.
  5. Small team, big impact. You will shape core product experiences and influence how design operates inside squads.
  6. Strong compensation and benefits including competitive salary, equity, and a people-first benefits package.
